I really do believe I’ll end up majoring in economics in college but since this is such a popular major i’m thinking that writing this on the app might slightly diminish my chances. Am i better off putting something like history, which i excelled at throughout high school? Or is history also a very popular major that would be just as competitive as economics?

There isn't any difference for admissions purposes. For that kind of thing, the only major that would help would be an unusual major that that one college specializes in. I can't think of an example.

A more meaningful situation is when you have to apply to a different college within the university because of your intended major. Most people apply to something sounding like the College of Arts and Sciences. Engineers apply to something sounding like the College of Engineering. For prestigious business colleges, they might be a separate college such as Wharton at UPenn. Each college within a university handles its own admissions. Once you are accepted and attend a school, it is usually easy to change majors within the college, but difficult to change majors if it means switching colleges within the university.
