Intended Major Question

Looking at College Confidential "what are my chances?" posts, I see that students usually have the same intended majors; there are many poli-sci majors, pre-med bio-majors, etc. On ones application, would it be wise to list a less common major? Is it detrimental to tell a college that you want to major in political science, when you know that a large number of applicants have the same intentions? If you are applying to a school because there is a good program in your intended major, is it unwise to promote yourself as a candidate for a less common major?

Personally, I don't think you should lie. That said, I also don't think it's that important, since so many people chance their majors once they get to college anyway.

want2bIvy, I don't think it matters all that much unless there's some inconsistency in your application.

Applying to be a math major when you have a 500 on your SAT Math section is ridiculous. Same with wanting to be a humanities major if you are weak in CR. I think they can see that inconsistency and reject you for that particular school.

I think some colleges don't even care what school you're applying to. Honestly, I don't think it matters all that much. For some schools, changing your major can be a pain, so just be honest and put down the major you're interested in. If nothing else, put Undecided if you're not sure or think your major is too 'popular'.
