<p>rest assured, no matter what you put down, you are not bound to it and can easily change your mind several times between now and when you graduate</p>
<p>i think they ask just because it is interesting to them to know the overall aggregate inclinations of their incoming class. it also might (although not necessarily) give them a more wholistic view of who you are if your choice seems consistent with your extracurricular interests (for example if you are a prospective science concentrator that has spent a lot of time in research labs)</p>
<p>i did read somewhere on their website that when it does come down to it (reality speaks), since applicants are really close in credentials, they may look at major as a small factor. for example, they may need more of a certain type of major. or if you are a female showing strong interests in engineering, for example. but they probably don't solely look at the major... they probably look if it's supported by your interests when making a decision like that.</p>
