Hey guys this forum has always been helpful and I really need some advice.

My school only allows me to take 4 APs junior year, and I was considering between AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Writing, AP Calculus BC, and AP United States History.

I want to major in the science field, and want to really take APES because the teacher would be a perfect rec for me (club advisor/knows my awards well, two years of teaching me, etc.). But idk if i should drop AP Writing or APUSH.

Note that last year i took Honors USH (I), so wouldnt taking regular USH look really bad?

Thanks!! ~ Upsilon

What’s AP Writing? I’m guessing it’s your school’s name for AP English Language or AP English Literature?

I would just take AP Chem, AP Writing (?), AP Calc BC, and AP Enviro :)

yeah sorry AP writing is basically AP English Language…

so basically cut APUSH… but like i said, since i took Honors US History (I) freshmen year, wouldnt taking academic USH look really bad next year?

Take AP English. Your Enviro teacher would be an awesome rec, like you said.

This is completely based off of my school, but to me, AP Environmental Science seems to be a joke. I wouldn’t take it , but if you think that the teacher’s recommendation is worth the weaker class, go for it.

AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, and APUSH are the ones I would definitely suggest taking. If AP Lit is offered Junior year, what are you taking senior year?

Good Luck!

Actually, at my school APES is actually a semi-decent class, at the same difficulty as AP Calc BC, i’d even go as far to say.

And no, AP Lang is for junior year, Lit is for senior… Thanks guys this is really helpful!

Back to square one… APUSH or AP Writing? Notice that APUSH is like infinitely times harder and no one, i mean no one, has gotten anything above a B+ in that class. The teacher is graduated from Harvard and Yale, for god’s sake. He had INSANE standards…

AP writing/language, from someone that I have talked to, is completely different than AP Lit. The person I talked to said that the class was ridiculously easy. I would say APUSH, it seems to be kinda a standard for Juniors or Sophomores, depending on the school. Do it especially if you can take English H instead. Your weighted GPA will end up higher, and from what I have gathered, you will take a more rigorous class. Once again, I have no personal knowledge of AP writing, only from someone else at a completely different school.

yeah the fine problem is that there is no honors english.
nor is there any honors USH. SMH

Why does your school limit the number of AP’s? I know at my school they will make exceptions for certain rules if you show that you are highly capable in a certain field or in general. Just don’t be afraid to ask for an exception, I had to push to get Physics AP and Bio AP the same year, and even without a limited number of APs, that took some time. Still I would recommend APUSH because it is more rigorous and shows that, even though you have a regular class, you took a harder AP class. To be completely honest, I would drop APES because it is one of the easiest APs, even if the class itself is hard, especially because you already have bio AP. If you really want another Science AP, throw on Physics or Chem, they are both higher than APES in prestige. For alot of it, it doesn’t matter if the class is harder, but instead how prestigious the class is. Your teacher can still give you a rec, even if you only had her for two years, especially if you are doing more with her.

Idk my school’s limit is already 3, but i’m appealing to 4.

I was under the impression that getting recs from teachers not teaching during junior/senior years is looked unfavorably upon… And it would then only have been one year teaching me (this year)…

I personally cannot say, because I haven’t even been thinking about rec letters. If that is the case, stick with APES. It is your choice regarding if you want to have a harder schedule or not. I doubt nobody gets A’s in APUSH. I was under the same impression for two of my classes this year, one of them being APUSH. Someone has a 106% in that class. Those stereotypes of impossible classes are, from my experience, not always true.
