I was recently accepted to Medill as an undergrad, class of 2020. I had originally applied with an interest in Science Journalism, with the idea that I would be taking both journalism and science courses (outside of Medill). However, after reading online, I have begun to think that it may be a better idea for me to focus mainly on science, then if I am still interested, take on journalism in grad school. Because of this, I am considering trying to transfer out of Medill, into Weinberg.
In general, how difficult is it to transfer in and out of schools? Is it possible to do this before the start of freshman year in the fall? Who should I contact if I do decide to transfer?
If anyone has had a similar experience, please share your knowledge. Thank You!
You should have zero trouble transferring from Medill to Weinberg. Once you meet with your academic advisor, you will get a better idea of the steps you need to take. Don’t even feel pressured to do anything. My roommate is a SESP major, but is taking classes as if she is an English major this quarter after taking classes as if she was a BME major fall quarter! There’s a ton of freedom.
Thank you for the response! That’s very reassuring to hear.
Its sooo easy to transfer. I did it myself (not from Medill though), and a friend of mine started out in Medill, went to Weinberg, then McCormick, then Weinberg again, and even with study abroad is going to be able to graduate early.
Here’s the info from the registrar for transferring: http://www.registrar.northwestern.edu/forms/interschool_transfer.html
If you apply to transfer before April 22nd, it seems like you’ll be able to transfer. I am, however, not sure if this is the case for incoming freshpeople.
I would recommend contacting the registrar, whose email address you can find at the bottom of the linked page, as well as the Weinberg Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising (number given on linked page) and/or the number for the main Medill office found at the following link, if need be.

Whatever happens, you’ll be fine. And if you’ve definitely decided on Northwestern, welcome!
