Intercollegiate athletics in perspective

Below is a link to an article issued yesterday on the colgate.edu website:

Colgate is No. 1 in graduation rate, says NCAA - Colgate University News

It's a great testament to getting the balance right. Here is a top LAC delivering rigorous academics and a deep, broad Division 1 varsity program with 25 sports including football, basketball and ice hockey.

All too often college applicants who are great athletes confront the question of how they can combine their studies with their practices and game commitments at the D1 level. Sadly, there are too many institutions failing to deliver what they may promise and their graduation rates are embarrassingly low. Here is an example of excellence that provides some needed and useful perspective.

My daughter will be entering Colgate in 2011. She is a recruited athlete and couldn’t be happier about the mix of academics and athletics.

Loophole,

That’s good news indeed about your daughter’s plans to enroll this coming Fall as a Colgate scholar-athlete.

I believe that the approach Colgate takes has proven to be the right one, as it is focused on sustaining a healthy and cohesive community of students, faculty and staff. In January, 2011 the new 15,000 square foot Trudy Fitness Center will open. Combined with the existing Little Fitness Center, which becomes the Varsity Weight Training Room in March, Colgate will have roughly 24,000 square feet of space dedicated to conditioning. The vacated weight room will become additional space for dance and other recreational purposes. These facilities are inspired choices and are part of the Wellness Initiative, a vital component of the Residential Life program.

More information about these programs can be viewed at colgate.edu under Student Life and Raider Sports.

Best of luck with your daughter’s senior year and further plans!
