does anyone know anything specific about the interdisciplinary major program? i'm wondering how tough it is to get a major approved, how many students do it/enjoyed their experience with it, etc. really my only problem with w&m is it's lack of a communication studies/media major, but with the courses available in their speech department mixed in with some sociology/psychology/anthropology courses, i think it would be feasible that i might be able to create such major on my own. thanks in advance for any advice :)

I’m double majoring in two programs that are technically part of the interdisciplinary program. However, for the make your own major, I know a couple people who are doing it - both in the English/Social/Other soft humanities side. Professor Kate Aires, I think it may be spelled, is the head of the Hispanic Studies department and does a TON of film and media work. She has been to Cuba to film many times, and is always being invited to film festivals around the world. I definitely think it could be done, and she may be a great person to talk to about it. She will be in DC next semester teaching students who chose to “study away” there about media, journalism, and that sort of thing while they do different internships with various groups in the Capital.
There is a great Media Studio with tons of equipment, recording rooms, and great Apple computers for mixing stuff in the basement of Swem Library.
One recent graduate who I’ve met is also the head of part of Colonial Williamsburg’s media department, I believe it is, and he helps facilitate the filming of movies and educational films in CW. So I definitely think there is opportunity for that sort of thing.

one of my friends created their own major. Take a look through the course catalog and send someone an email! Your general outline sounds like it would probably work to me. I assume you have seen this: [William & Mary - Self-Designed Major](http://www.wm.edu/as/charlescenter/interdisciplinary/selfdesigned/index.php)

You can absolutely create your own major at W&M assuming you can find a faculty advisor and enough classes (usually between 12 and 15 classes). Not sure if anyone has created a communications major to date but you can certainly contact the Charles Center which oversees interdiscplinary and self-designed majors to see if they think it’s feasible to have such a major at W&M.
