Interdisciplinary Majors?

Do you or have you known anyone who created their own major? What was it-what classes did it consist of and what are you/him/her doing right now with that degree?

Creating your own major and majoring in an interdisciplinary major are two different things. For example, at Bates Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary major and at Bowdoin Theater/English is one (you can't major in just straight up theater there). Are you asking strictly about self-designed majors like they have at Hampshire?

Both but i'm more interested in self-designed majors.

My college has "independent majors." Most independent majors occur in fields where the college offers a minor but not a major. Independent majors are not truly self-designed because there are very clear expectations about what courses one would have to take to get it approved. (For example, International Relations requires 4 years of a single foreign language.) The college also does not approve independent majors that look like they want to bypass some of the requirements of an already existing major. I doubt a History of the Middle East major would get approved because one could get a regular history major by just adding on a few courses.
