interent usage?

What is allowed on interent use for UCLA?

I heard we arent supposed to download music or use bittorrent. Is this true?

Also Im a avid CS player, would I still be able to play CS with the internet provided at UCLA(internet speed and rule-wise)?

We're not supposed to download illegal ****. It's way easier to get caught with a UCLA IP address.

But go ahead and play your damn CS, I've never heard of speed probs with UCLA's internet connection or whatever you're worried about.

And porn is a nonissue, except w/ your roommates.

anything legal is fine obviously.

lol omg...do u play CS source or 1.6...i quit that crap sophomore year in HS it takes up too much clan to be in a clan and a league (i was cal-p!) lol

Porn was/is a nonissue w/ my roommates, HAHAHAHAHA.

I also quit during sophmore and junior year for SAT studying but went back during senior year since i got hit by the senoritis and a sense of freedom i never felt before(maybe thats also part of the senoritis).

^ huh?

To the OP, your latency on CS will be the lowest on whatever server you are on :D

I miss UCLA dorm internet...

how the hell did you get to cal-p? ive been stuck at cal-o for 3 years...

haha cs... senior year was way too fun. clickNconnect tourney's everymonth, went to san jose for euphnet... lanning is the only fun aspect of cs. online is too lame. #nervedamage @gamesurge.net hit me up -hershy- we'll play

^You guys are creeping me out!

Internet speed is awesome though, and you should have no problem with ping/latency on internet games. Though LAN can be a lot of fun too if you have enough players on your floor.

You can download music and/or use bittorrent. Just make sure you're not downloading copyrighted material. Just use Lastfm or Pandora to listen to music!

i dont get it. at orientation they said that they find your IP because sometimes the owners of the copywrited material download from other people who have their stuff.

so wouldnt turning off uploads prevent this from happening?

^ they can find out stuff in all sorts of ways. also, you can't use bittorrent then.

please dont be that loser who plays cs extensively during the first 2 weeks.

Downloading and using bit torrent software and torrents is NOT ILLEGAL. The illegal part of it is when you download COPYRIGHTED stuff like music, movies, software, etc.

But there are legal torrents out there. Stuff like Linux ISOs are usually distributed via bit torrent. Many free internet TV shows also distribute via bit torrent.

So as long as what you're downloading is NOT copyrighted material that you would normally have to purchase, you'll be fine.

is it illegal to listen to music on imeem?

One good thing to do is to enable sharing on your itunes collection. That way, the rest of your network subnet (usually the rest of your floor and maybe part of the one above or below you) can access and stream your music. Usually there are several people on who are sharing their music. Great way to expand your "collection", if only temporarily.

We get free access to Ruckus at UCLA. Just download whatever you want from there.

i heard ruckus files cant by put on an ipod/ other mp3.

yes ruckus files can't be put on ipods... you can't even burn them to cds... and it doesn't work with macs :(

tba,

Any online streaming music service is fine. Pandora, Last.fm, imeem, etc are all legal because they pay a streaming radio fee to the record companies for permission to operate their service. So it is free to the user and 100% legal.
