For the supplemental essay I discussed my interest in my major, but not Cornell at all. Would this have a negative effect at all at chances of admission? Or do they not care?

Well, the essays ask you how you will use the resources and opportunities the specific college you applied to (CAS, CALS, ILR, HE, etc.) to “further explore” your major or interests. So a major component of the essay was to mention something about Cornell and how it would help you reach your endeavors. So you had to show that you knew some basic things about Cornell’s programs, your major at Cornell, and so on. If you didn’t mention Cornell at all, your essay would seem recycled (like you could have used it for any other university). It wouldn’t make it personal to Cornell. With that said, I think it might have a negative effect. But that’s just my take.

That’s what I thought, because after submitting it I saw one of the admissions people write that on their site. I had realized this before I submitted, but I didn’t want to lie and BS. I never got a chance to visit it, and the reason I want to go there doesn’t fit in with how it would help me with my major.

I don’t think it plays much of a factor like it does a Washu, where they ask if you have visited the campus. Your essays should convey a genuine enthusiasm to attend Cornell though, so you might be in trouble.
