I'm currently a first year student attending the University of Cincinnati and am in an exploratory (undecided) major. Money is important to me but I'd also like to join my job to an extent. My interests lie in business and technology. I originally thought I wanted to go with CS but business seems to be drawing me in lately.

I was contemplating double majoring in Operations Management and Marketing or Information Systems and Operations Management. Would this be a good combination?

What type of starting salary would I be looking at? Also, if I go this route I will be eventually getting my MBA (most likely here at UC).

I've read a lot of talk bashing schools outside of the top 10 and saying the degree is pointless if it's not from a prestigious school. So are you guys telling that a degree from UC is worthless?

Operations Management is some really interesting stuff. For your majors, use all the resources your business school gives to you. This includes job fairs, career center, advisors, etc. You will be fine.

What kind of companies would you like to work for…and doing what? That way this board could give you a good idea on what you can double major in?

Eventually when your career is set, you can also look into IT consulting or Operations consulting, if that is your thing. An MBA will be most helpful for those positions. I see A LOT of people with a particular technical skill-set going into consulting eventually.

I’m interested in marketing, information systems, and management. At first I looked at accounting but that just doesn’t seem like something I’d be interested in. As far as a company I would want to work for I’m not really sure. I like that with a business degree you can work for all types of companies. I’d like to work with a company that sells a product that I have some knowledge about and that I’m interested in.

Any ideas? I’m mainly interested in marketing so what would be a good degree to pair it with? There is a major here called Organizational Leadership that seems interesting. Also, would Finance be a good pairing?

Try pairing marketing with econ or statistics. That way you’ll understand consumer theory, and or you’ll have some quant skills, which is a big plus as marketing is generally considered a fluff major.

Why would the degree be worthless? It’s not Harvard but it sure ain’t a high school diploma. In fact, many jobs you get will require you to have a degree with little regard for where it came from and often what it’s in. Don’t listen to people who tell you your degree is worthless. It may not get you to the exec suite in two years but it will get you employed when paired with basic interview skills. People who tell you it’s worthless either went to a top ten school or pretend on this forum that they did. Don’t you find it odd that given Harvard’s exclusivity and the selection rates for investment banking, this forum seems flooded with experts in both? Get your degree and have a leg up on 72% of Americans.([America The Uneducated](<a href=“Businessweek - Bloomberg”>http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_47/b3960108.htm))
