interested in a SUNY w/ a good law program, any advice? :)

I already have a list of schools I'm really hoping to get into like vassar, wes, and bard, but I live in NY, and I definitely want to apply to some SUNYs. I'm interested in going pre-law, but I dont really know which SUNYs offer good programs for that. I hear about Bing, Geneseo, and New Paltz the most, and I've heard that they're all pretty great schools. I'm just hazy on what the differences are between them. I'm looking for a school that's small, not TOO far away from nyc (i'm from queens), and has a good record of students getting into good grad schools. i know bing is known as being like the public ivy, and then geneseo is the honors college, but i dont want to apply to these on that knowledge alone. please help me out if you know anything about these schools that might help me narrow it down a bit. thanks tons!!! =D

Pre-law is not a major, it’s just an advising track. What do you intend to major in? Geneseo is small but is quite a distance from NYC and not easily accessible to any major airport. All have solid academic reputations although NP is certainly more known for the arts. You really should visit a few SUNY campuses, especially Binghamton and NP, to see what they’re like and have to offer, as well as the areas they’re in. It’s hard to make any clear recommendations without having an idea what your stats and interests are.

Oh, i know that it’s an advising track. i’m considering majoring in political sciences with a minor in international relations, depending on what the school offers.

My son is at New Paltz…it’s the only SUNY he would consider due to its proximity to NYC and more happening surrounding area.

All three are good choices…

I would also take into consideration the number of students in each of these colleges applying to lawschool as well as the acceptance rate.

As for access to an airport we use to fly out of Rochester to Kennedy or Laguardia wasn’t really a big deal.

If you are pretty much settled on being close to NYC Geneseo would probably not be a good choice for you.

Link to their pre-law program:
http://www.geneseo.edu/prelaw

https://www.geneseo.edu/admissions/pre-law-brochure

^ Geneseo is at least 30 miles from Roch…a friend told me that the Rochester student shuttle runs on weekends, or the day after all exams end, otherwise it’s a pain to use the public bus system (especially with luggage) and taxis to the airport are $80+. So, it’s not impossible, but just doesn’t appear to be easily accessible!

OP, Bing lists the average percentage of grads continuing to law school at 5%, Geneseo at 4%, and NP doesn’t provide data (you can search this easily on collegeboard, under the Majors tab). Have you considered SUNY Albany? Given their location, which would give you internship opportunities in your major, and law school affiliation, it may be worth a look:

Also, if you have the stats for admission to Geneseo and Binghamton, you’d likely get merit aid from Albany.
