Interested in Sociology and Psychology?

I'm very intersted in Sociology and Psychology. Someday I hope to become either a Sociologist, a Social Psychologist, or an Industrial Psychologist. Because I'm interested in both subjects, I can't decide which to study. Should I go in undecided and figure out which I prefer or....

A) Major in Sociology

B) Major in Psychology

C) Major in Psychology and Minor in Sociology (or vice versa)

D) Double Major

Which path would make it easiest to get into graduate school for both subjects?

bump bump bump

If you know you’re going to work hard, I would double major since your career plans tie these two subjects together. If you’re not too sure about double majoring, I would major in sociology and minor in psychology.

If you mean that you’d like to apply to both kinds of programs, note that sociology and psychology are both pretty insular fields. They like to take PhD students who have majored in their field in undergrad. I/O master’s programs typically prefer psych majors or business majors with significant psych coursework. So if you want to leave your options open widest, I suggest you double-major. You could also major in one and officially minor in the other, but take more courses than the minor requires so that you have a significant amount of coursework in that field.

But I suggest for now that you go in undecided, then take the introductory class in both fields. I too needed to decide between sociology and psychology and while I liked them both a lot, I ended up liking the psych intro class more than the sociology intro class. I’m currently in a PhD program in social psychology, but because it’s an interdisciplinary program with public health, I also get to explore a lot of sociological issues/factors/theories as well.
