Hello,

I'm 20 years old and I will be beginning my undergraduate studies this upcoming fall. I graduated from high school in 2004 when I was 18 and have dedicated the past 2 years to full-time employment. I have maintained this job consistently and I have even moved up to a managerial/supervisor role where I am in charge of up to 9 employees on a given day.

I will be entering full-time undergraduate status at a state university in New England where I will still be working part-time along with focusing on my academics. I was just interested in getting some feedback from the "experts" or atleast those that have an understanding of the admissions process at Berkeley about my interest in applying. During high school, I was enrolled in primarily "A" level coursework and recieved a 3.0/4.0 GPA (unweighted) upon graduating. I was a member of a number of clubs/organizations and varsity football/lacrosse.

Since high school, other than full-time employment, I have dedicated time to coaching youth lacrosse in my area, volunteering at the church soup kitchen, the Special Olympics, and teaching CCD classes at my church as well. During this upcoming summer/fall, I will be taking an internship along with my current job at the headquarters for the Democratic National Party in my state.

What advice do you have on selecting coursework? (I am aware that UCB only accepts junior transfers). I am able to enter a two-year degree program in general studies at my state university, would this be a wise choice? I figured it would allow me to show during the application process a diverse selection of coursework to judge me on.

p.s. As a junior transfer applicant, would UCB require me to submit SAT scores still? And if so, would I need to submit SAT I and SAT II scores? I ask this because I took them when I was a junior and scored an 1180, but that was 4 years ago. Just a thought.

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR FEEDBACK ON ANYTHING ELSE AS WELL! THANK YOU.

Congrats on your internship at the democratic national committe...Good for you ( kick those dirty Republicans out of office). Im sorry, but i dont know much about transfer admissions to Cal (im a freshman admit).

How did you get that internship though..I would love to do any kind of work for the DNC, paid or not. Do you know who i could contact for that?

"p.s. As a junior transfer applicant, would UCB require me to submit SAT scores still? And if so, would I need to submit SAT I and SAT II scores?"

No.

p.s. go to the transfer forum.

Transferring to Berkeley is going to be very difficult but not impossible as they give priority to in state students. Make everything in your application (personal statements + volunteering + leadership + internships + other work experience) beyond exceptional and then you'll have a decent shot.

Best of luck =]

abmed...I just googled "Democratic National Party" along with my state and their main website appeared. Then I e-mailed their offices and replied with an application to their internship program.

Thanks Astro..Im gonna try to do that.

In reply to your question if you need to send your SAT scores to Berkeley if your transfering as a junior, the answer is no. I have been admitted as a junior applicant to UCB and they did not ask for them. I attended Modesto Junior College in california for the past 2.5 years and just graduated last month. Berkeley however does need to see your HS transcripts and college transcripst aswell as any AP credit you've obtained. In terms of what is consider an average GPA for a transfer student it is between 3.5-3.9, I applied with a 3.71 although my friend was admitted having a 3.34 so its hard to predict sometimes. Just complete the required courses they ask and try to bring your GPA up other than that go beyond the classroom, get involve and be active in your community and school. hope this helps

...just curious, but when you said complete the courses that they ask you to, which ones are you refering to exactly? I was planning on enrolling in a 2 year degree program in general studies which basically touches upon courses in math, science, english, and inbetween. Is there a specific group of courses one should enroll in prior to applying to UCB? I'm not signing up for my fall courses just yet so I still have time to get any input/advice!

Berkeley requires you to complete your english and math requirements and any lower division courses for your major before enrolling. For the english requirement that includes your English 101 or entrance college writing and any Reasoning or advance composition/critical thinking class, of course this differs from school to school. In terms of the math anything beyond precal is fine. Calculus is preferred but not necessary.
If you attend a school in cali and you wish to obtain a list of the courses that are transferable to berkeley go to www.assist.org
