Interested in USC transfer in Fall 2006

I am from New York originally but lived in Florida from age 10 until I graduated high school and went to college in New York at Hofstra University(private college few have heard of outside the state of NY). Here are my stats. My major is currently a BA in Audio, Video/TV and Film. I would transfer to the Cinema-Television Major at USC.

Standing:2nd Semester Sophomore (Due to APs I brought in from HS)

GPA:3.87

Extracurriculars: Founding Father and Secretary of the Delta Chi Fraternity, Drama Department, Select Chorus, Pep Band, Hofstra Film Club, Thursday Night Live(low end SNL), Federal Work Study

What do you think my chances of getting in are and how much financial aid could I possibly get? Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure on the specific requirements for your major, but I was accepted for Business with a 3.82

Your GPA looks good though, and I would suspect you have a good shot at admissions.

Thanks for replying. Just out of curiousity where did you transfer from and in which year for you? Also how many of your credits transferred. Thanks again.

I transferred from CA JC after my second year. (60 units)

I live in California, and have heard of Hofstra University, and as far as I can remember, it has a pretty good reputation as a private institution. As for applying to the Cinema-Television school at USC, the program is by far one of the best in the country, and is thus highly competitive. This page: http://www-cntv.usc.edu/admissions/admissions-faq.cfm should give you some information and maybe some links on how to plan your transfer to the school. With a 3.87 GPA, you should be a competitive applicant, but being enrolled in the honors program at your school could help, too. another thing that USC looks for is the G.E.s a transfer can fulfill, check their website for their G.E. requirements, they are pretty different from the usual. Included in this is the foreign language requirement, but CNTV majors may or may not have to fulfill this before transferring. Hope some of this helps, and good luck.

P.S. this might also help: http://afaweb.esd.usc.edu/USC-AFA/upload_images/adcoursewrkreq.pdf

Looks like you have a great shot. I was in D-Chi too. Anyways, if i could get in with a 3.47, your GPA should more than suffice. Just keep your grades up and fulfill all the GEs

you all are overlooking the fact that the School of Cinema-Television at USC is extremely competitive and is a leading Film school in the nation. Yes, his stats are great, but much will also depend on his reason for transferring, as well as the supplemental material he will submit (which might include a tape of his own production, a creative written piece, etc) its basically like an art school, but for film, which requires much more than a GPA. I'm not trying to take anything from you and your achievements, thus far you have been a great student and really motivated, but do please keep in mind that this is THE program when it comes to Film, not just because of its location, but because of the program itself. Look into some other schools as well, and again, i still think you have a great shot at the school, just know that its not an easy ride into the school because you have an awesome GPA and ECs.

"its basically like an art school, but for film"

...it IS an art school, since film is an artform. and i'm sure his reasons and supplemental materials will be sufficient.

i think you have a very good shot, but it's going to be very tedious, and worth it, if you get in. you're gonna need writing samples, personal statements, a list of your portfolio work, 2-3 letters of reccomendation, and a high GPA. they might ask to see your SAT's too. if you get in, remember that since EVERYONE wants to direct, they don't start production tracks till junior year. screenplays also have to be approved by faculty. this film school is very much like the way a studio would be run, which can be either good or bad. the bad that i see in it is that creative control is highly limited.

why don't you also apply to like NYU, UCLA, Northwestern, or Columbia?

post script: you're gonna spend a plethora of money.

you think a 3.4 could get into USC for Econ??? Most likely a reach?

I think you can. But USC's econ isn't that great.

uscwannabe, is that 3.47 gpa only in transferrable courses?

you have a decent shot with a 3.4. though i don't know about USC econ's reputation. i imagine it's really good. i mean, it's USC.

Depends on what you mean by "good". If I am not mistaken, USC is relatively weak in liberal arts (i.e. sciences/humanities/social sciences). FYI: its econ program is NOT in top 40.

2006 ranking for econ graduate program:
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology 5.0
University of Chicago 5.0
3. Harvard University (MA) 4.9
Princeton University (NJ) 4.9
Stanford University (CA) 4.9
University of California–Berkeley 4.9
7. Yale University (CT) 4.8
8. Northwestern University (IL) 4.6
9. University of Pennsylvania 4.5
10. University of California–San Diego 4.3
11. Columbia University (NY) 4.2
University of California–Los Angeles 4.2
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor 4.2
University of Wisconsin–Madison

Why pay a lot more $$ and not go to UCLA? 3.4 gpa is probably low for UCLA whose admission is pretty fixated on GPA. But you don't know you can get in if you don't even try.

Thank you everyone for replaying and thanks forall the great advice. UCLA I think will be tougher to get in than USC due to not being in CA. USC is private so being outside of CA doesn't hurt. I will have already taken some tv production classes and film classes and will also have acting classes that all involve creative things I can add to my portfolio list. I am willing to do whatever it takes to attend this school even if it means getting a loan that I have to pay back the rest of my life(although their average financial need met at USC is 99.9 and I have a lot of need). I am going to start working on everything now and get in touch with admissions to ask which classes I need to take to fulfill their GEs so I will be read to transfer in a year. Thanks again everyone for your help. I really appreciate it.

I was accepted with a 3.47 as a neuroscience major. I was in the Honors College taking rather difficult classes and fulfilled all GEs. My highschool stats were decent (4.5, 1270 SAT) and i had work experience and ECs. I think my essay was a big factor too

USC asks for at least 3 letters of recommendation from a variety of sources. Besides professors, whom do you think would be a good person to get a letter of recommendation from? Also I am going to choose the critical studies major as my 2nd choice major as I have heard it's easier to get in than the production program and I also am a critical person, and would do that well. I have also heard that there are a plethora of oppurtunities to be involved with filmmaking at USC even if you are not in the production program. Anyone have any good info on this? Thank you.

"Why pay a lot more $$ and not go to UCLA? 3.4 gpa is probably low for UCLA whose admission is pretty fixated on GPA. But you don't know you can get in if you don't even try."

although your note of rank disparity for that specific program taken into account you have noticed he said he's out of state right? the fees in the end odnt amount to "a lot more $$" and he's verbally expressed interest in stuff that USC does signifigantly excell in. unless he's applying to alot of schools it may not hurt to get into UCLA, but it sounds like USC is more for him anyway, assuming he got into both.
