Interested in West Point

Hey, I'm a sophomore in High School who is interested in attending the Academy. I have no JROTC experience; however, I was thinking about helping my school start a program. I have been Class President for 2 years in High school so far, I am a member of Key Club, Latin Club and Deborah Heart and Lung Foundation. My GPA is so-so, in the A- range. I played tennis for the team one year, but I'm probably going to give it up for track. How important are sports?

any advice/feedback?

thank you, I appreciate it greatly

Welcome!

Your leadership potential looks great. Class rank is really important, and so are SAT/ACT scores. Athletic participation (and competition) is also important.
The USMA admissions site should be helpful to you:
<a href="http://admissions.usma.edu/startyoung.cfm%5B/url%5D">http://admissions.usma.edu/startyoung.cfm</a></p>

My school doesn't have jrotc either, they certainly won't hold that against you. Your score for admissions is 60% academic, 30% leadership, and 10% physical fitness, so you can see academics are important! A- is certainly good enough for West Point.

Sports are important, I think... you should try and make varsity for some sport, and, if possible, be captain of the team.

And looking back, I wish I had started practicing for the CFA (WP's physical fitness test) my sophomore year. If you aren't a whiz at push ups, pull ups, etc, hop to it! You have tons of time to improve

Run, run, run.

thank you for your great advice! :)

I don't have much community service; however, I am thinking about joining the squad as soon as I turn 16. Do you think that the EMS is a good option for community service?
thank you

"Do you think that the EMS is a good option for community service?"

If you are asking if community service is really important to West Point admissions, I don't believe it is, so don't do it if you are only doing it for resume purposes. Do what interests you and if possible take a leadership position.

If you look at recent admissions profiles you will see that activities that admissions tracks include:
Student leadership, Scouting, American Legion Boys/Girls State, Drama/ Debate/Public Speaking, Athletics (Varsity Level, Captain)
This is not to say that only these activites are important. Plenty of candidates are accepted with alternative activities but it does give you an idea of what they are looking for.
