Interesting Essay topic

Hey guys, hows it going. As the big senior year approaches, I have been thinking about getting down a few essays to have down by the time the application process begins. While I have a lot of qualifications that I could illuminate (Editorial positions on paper, leadership in engineering and math team, etc), I am thinking of focusing on a hobby of mine: Stand up comedy (I perform in shows and such).

My question is this: is this a stupid idea where the adcoms will disregard me completely, or is it unique and interesting enough to draw attention and become a positive aspect which separates me from all those other kids who also have high stats and such.

Your thoughts appreciated,

Nate

Sounds fabulous. Especially since it's not something that's apparent in the actual application. I do think it's unique enough a hobby to make you stand out among all the other high-achievers.

First of all, it's awesome. You're a stand-up comic...that is so, so freaking cool. Adcoms will salivate over it.

I'm wary of doing any of my essays in the traditional sense. All of mine are random and weird like that. LOL.

well i did a dialogue, conventional thinking is overrated. have fun with it. and i think being a stand up comedian is really cool btw. go for it!

My best friend wrote about stand-up comedy (he's damn funny) for his applications and will be heading to Northwestern. It's a great EC--shows poise, creativity, all the good stuff.

I've never heard of it before, so I'm going to go with unique and interesting. If I were an adcom, and read a million application essays about leadership positions, the creative piece on stand up comedy would be a major relief. I'd go for it.

so is it okay to write about something that seems completely trivial? I have something I want to write about..I can write about my "leadership" extra curriculars but would rather try something different..?

Topics that seem "completely trivial" can actually make for some of the best essays! One of my friends wrote a very good essay about drinking tea. If the "completely trivial" topic will tell a bit about who you are, what you care about, etc. then go for it.
