?Interesting hobby? GIVE INPUT! (:

Is the fact that i am fluent in american sign language (i'm not disabled in any way . . . i just did it out of pure interest) a good "spike" or something that could set me apart from other applicants in ehh . . . 3 years (: I'M A HIGH SCHOOL FRESHIE! Thanks in advance for your opinion.

bump . . . . . .

honestly, no, unless you do something substantial with that knowledge.

Probably. Stanford likes quirks like that, and the more talents you have the better.

Agree with Trying; you can’t put that kind of knowledge anywhere in your application (without looking kind of lame) but Senior is right, too: Stanford likes quirks (any college does), so if you can incorporate that into your essays (roommate essay) in a fun way, or talk seriously about how it’s helped you shape your identity (this sounds harder for you if you did it just for fun), or talk about some profound comparison/contrast you found between spoken and sign language (intellectual vitality essay, esp. if you plan on declaring linguistics) then it’ll def. help.

So it’s a matter of how you present it. And for the time being, if you haven’t done anything with the knowledge, I’d say just mention it in passing in an essay.

^ thanks for your input!

You can probably say that you’re fluent in ASL on the Common App–they have a section to let you say which languages you’re fluent in. I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t allow ASL (if they didn’t, it would be terribly discriminatory).

Lol but really, why are you posting on college forums as a freshman? Relax and enjoy what you can of high school. I’d start asking about my app around spring junior year.

lol, I can’t believe you’re asking this question . . . at all. smh

And I say this because the post comes across as desperate . . . really, just relax and have fun in your high school years, as Francaisalamatt pointed out. It might not seem like much now, but if it continues, eventually you end up questioning everything you do in high school. “Will this, that, or the other thing give me a ‘1 up’ in the college admissions process?” Ehh…

Not saying you’ll turn out that way, OP, but I am saying that I frown upon such behavior.
