Hi I'm brainstorming ideas for the next issue of my school paper. Are there any interesting stories out there I should research? I live in California but we cover national topics as well.

2009 is one hell of a year for news. Why not talk about the “near historical” G20 summit that happened just yesterday in London? I could list out a dozen or so topics if you want. Does it have to be domestic, or can it be international? I’m assuming it’s okay for it to be political?

The topic can be international as long as the writer makes a connection between the story and our school. That’s the tricky part.

An unnamed man died in the middle of an unknown area in northern Russia.
Russia begins with a “r” which is used to spell rip. Rip is what happens to paper when you tear it. Tearing is the equivalent of destroying legal documents. Legal documents are used in government. The government funds public school systems. Our school is part of a public school system. Therefore, this was a striking and horrifyingly related issue to be considered in our next school assembly.

Well, just about anything that involves the nation as a whole will of course inevitably affect the people at your school. This is especially apparent with anything regarding the economy, and a little more ambiguous regarding national security (e.g., the US-Russia nuclear disarmament deal that was discussed just (I believe) two days ago, between Obama and Medvedev.

Is college admissions too obvious?

^ We have articles coming up about this. In fact, we’re trying to steer away from college -related articles. BUT I am covering the acceptance error that UCSD made by “accepting” all of its applicants. hilarious…

I’m thinking of issues that concern teens…politics, health, science, art…I’m checking various papers now for ideas.

Did your school do an April Fools issue?

Perhaps try discussing the things on Obama’s to-do list, which include the energy crisis, battling the financial meltdown, battling unemployment, strengthening cooperation with China/Iran/Russia (and every other country out there), keeping the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan Straight at peace, the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, making sure Pakistan doesn’t implode and fall to the Taliban, countering water shortage via conservation and desalinization, nuclear nonproliferation, educational reform, countering Chinese economic influence in Africa and Latin America, reaching out to the Muslim world, stabilizing the dollar, dealing with the federal deficit, and quite a bit more.
