you always hear about people who under their EC's say that they created an organization that raised $10,000 in a year, and then they donated it to the Hurricane Katrina fund blah blah blah, and it's always the same type of donation--to a charity.

my question is what would happen if you donated that money to the Harvard endowment fund? would it help you get in? i understand that $10,000 is nothing compared to the donations Harvard gets, but i'd wonder if it would help with the changes of admission.

anyway, just curious, post your thoughts.

Who cares if it would help you get in? In my opinion people in the Hurricane or whatever should get it just because they actually need it. I don't doubt that many people who go to Harvard need help but there are other scholarships and things out there. People down in ground zero of the hurricanes need it for things like food and water and shelter.

You shouldn't do things just because it might look good on a college resume or whatever, you should do them because you feel that you are honestly making a difference in the world. Gerr.

Sorry if that sounded harsh but I'm just sick of people doing things like community service and things because it will look good to colleges and not because they really feel like making a difference, which really has little to do with this post but I needed to rant it out.

But I think giving it to the college would help more.

Haha, im not trying to give the impression that people should donate to rich colleges instead of needy families....it was just hypothetical

I know. I kinda exploded. It wasn't at you by a long shot. It was at the people who did things like that.

do you think that actually happens?

Do I think people donate to Colleges over Charities to get their kids in? Yes.
Or were you asking something else?

I mean more kids raising money through various things and donating, not parents donating and getting their kids in on legacy. More the kids raising the money through fund raisers or something, but then donating the money to a school.

Oh, in that case then I think if it was a fundraiser then going to charity. Think about it, I don't know what its like where you come from but nobody around my neck of the woods would give money to give to a college. Now I do know people who have paid for people to be able to send in college apps but where I live, there's little money to go around and if somebody's in need they'll give it but not to a random school.

yeah, no one around me would do this either (i hope)--but just hypothetically--do you think it would help admission chances, or would the college not care?

If it was a student run fund raiser then I think colleges would look down upon giving it to them as opposed to worthy organizations. Like before though, if it was given by the parents it would probably be a boost.
