Interesting Stats from Boarding School Review

The following data has nothing to do with ranking. I know many people including myself don't like to rank BS. But it may be interesting to take a peek.

Hockaday seems pretty beastly, but I’ve never even heard of it…
It’s not too much of a surprise though. I’m pretty ignorant as far as boarding schools are concerned…

^ Hockaday is like 0.2% boarding, though (okay, huge exaggeration but you catch my drift!)

Haha, something I found funny was that Cate & Thacher have the same SAT score! Thacher = higher SSATs, lower acceptance, yet they have the same average SAT… hmm.

SSAT aint sh…[you know the rest]

Interesting how exeter doesn’t appear on the ssat list? I think boarding school review just might, just maybe, possibly be a crappy website.

Why, because Exeter didn’t submit their average SSAT to BSR?

Exeter doesn’t appear because BSR doesn’t have their SSAT statistics. But when I was still an applicant, I was told by Ms. Bergofski in the admissions office that their average SSAT was 85%. But who knows, that may have changed this admissions season.

Hockaday is an all girls school in Dallas. I think there are like 75 boarders out of a school of a 1085 which doesn’t seem like much but hockaday is a pre-k through 12 school and they only board from 8th through 12th grade so about 40% of the people in the highschool end up being boarders. i think it’s a good place to go if you live in the area but don’t want to have to drive back and forth everyday. you get like 40 overnights that you can take so you can go home on weekends a lot and stuff. I probably would have applied there but I really didn’t want to go to an all girls school. i live like 25 miles away though.

It seems like that Taft started realeasing its data. They have not disclosed their data in the boarding school review.

Also recognize that the differences are sometimes infinitesimally small (e.g. Andover 2076, St. Paul’s 2075). They are for just one year, so they move about. The differences among the top 5 or top 10 are slow gradations of gray. In fact (excluding Thomas Jefferson), the difference between Exeter and Middlesex is only 7/10ths of 1 percent! Hardly a meaningful difference!

So we are slicing the salami into transparently thin slices. So thin, that it becomes statistically irrelevant. You have to pick a top school and compare it to a bottom school before it becomes meaningful.

It is always so difficult to slice no matter how thick you cut because the difference between two adjacent schools is always so slim. The difference between 10th and 11th is less than 1%, and the difference between 20th and 21st is also less than 1%.

You can use the data as a reference. I understand what Winterset means. That is
why the list shows only 50 schools out of several hundred BS. All the 50 schools are good schools and they have a good reputations.

Then whichever school listed at 51st spot may complain(smile)!

I agree. All the schools from 1 to 30 certainly deserve better recognitions.

I guess the stats will help those who will apply this year. The stat cannot be an absolute
measure for BS. But it can be a good reference. Thanks for the erkybk’s posting!

85% is not Exeter’s SSAt average but minimum required. I remember I asked the admission officer, and she said 85% is minimum requirement. Therefore, even if tExeter did not post the average SSAT socore on Boarding School Review, we can guess it is highrer than 85%.

erkybk,
Don’t want to fan any flames but for all those looking to apply to Exeter, 85% is certainly not the “minimum required”. The school has fantastic diversity from all shapes, sizes, places and backgrounds and would never place a standardized test above the unique abilities of all applicants. Apologies for disagreeing but no boarding school has SSAT minimums, the test means something but it is not the “be all, end all” for admissions.

hola3,

You may disgree. But I am telling you exactly what I heard from the admission personnel.
My D took SSAT twice: the fist score was 89% and the second was 97%, and I called them to replace the fist score with the second one. Then the lady said that even the fist score was fine because the first score is higher than the minimum required. I do not know what it means exactly. But that is what I heard. I am telling you what she said exactly.

Fair enough. I won’t contest what an Exeter representative relayed to you. I only interjected because I didn’t want any possible candidates discouraged from applying to Exeter because their SSAT scores were lower than 85%. I’ve been working in the BS world for a while and have known several students who were admitted to Exeter without an 85% on the SSAT. It may be a general guideline score but any school is willing to admit a student with a strong “hook” and if that “hook” is strong enough, their standardized test scores can be far below a stated “minimum.”

I think that Exeter encourages peolple to get an 85% at least if they don’t have a strong hook. But they also don’t want them to get a 40% even if they have a strong hook.

I think all of hola3, erkybk, and urbanflop may be correct. I think if a student gets less than 85% SSAT, he/she has a very slim chance anyway unless they have a very very strong hook anyway considering the fact that Andover average SSAT is 93%.

If you consider a very very strong hook URM or athlete or legacy…then yea, you’re right.

Sure! That is very correct!
