43%????? I know at UW tradition says Abe would stand out of respect when a virgin walked by. He's still sitting.

When my hubby & I were in college (in the 60s & 70s), we always read those surveys as well & they said that there weren't many virgins. It's funny that nearly all the folks we knew were virgins (sure bugged my hubby that he couldn't find those "experienced" women). There is a LOT of self selection in the surveys & there are folks who like to distort the results by lying--my kids are among them.

I'm not allowed to visit websites with names like "studlife"

Never mind the stats..what about the other articles? More Hustler than Cosmo, IMHO.

Not a great selling point for the intellectual life of the newpaper editors....crikey.

Why would someone lie on this kind of survey? Just curious to know the rationale.

Folks lie for all sorts of reasons--to be outrageous, because they know they can get away with it (since it's anonymous), just because they're feeling rebellious, or "to fit in." At least those are a few reasons I can come up with. I know that I don't bother answering surveys unless I'm going to be honest on them, but I know a lot of very nice folks who intentionally lie on surveys for reasons of their own.

I don't think students who weren't virgins would claim they were, though. More likely it would be the other way around, since modern society doesn't really reward virginity anymore. The only possible inaccuracy I see there is a lot of students seem to think oral sex doesn't count as sex, so maybe some of the so-called virgins have had oral sex before.

You also have to consider the character of this particular school. I don't know much about it, but do you think it's representative of American college students? You might get very different pictures of the level of sexual activity of the average 18-year-old if you surveyed students at either Bob Jones University or UC Santa Barbera! ;)

You'd be surprised what kids will & won't say, to get a reaction or just to be contrary. I was honestly shocked whem my kids said they find it amusing that they & their friends lie on surveys. My kids & their friends seem as candid & clean cut as they come.

I truly believe there's a lot less casual sex going on that the media would have us believe. Many/most kids are aware of the dangers of AIDS, STDs, and other stuff that many of them really aren't interested in casual hook-ups. Of course, I may be way off base, but it probably depends on the circles you & your kids run in.

Divorce is supposed to epidemic such that 1 in 4 kids are raised by single moms. Nonetheless, most of the folks I am close to, nearly all of my extended family & most of my close friends & my parents friends have intact families (mom & dad & kids all living in one household); this is also the norm at my kids' HS. I know that in some/many circles, it's very unusual to have intact families & close ties with extended families.

D is a grad student at Wash U.
This was a special issue of their student newspaper called Student Life (or studlife for short) to celebrate Valentine's Day and what they are calling "Sex Week", an interdisciplinary, multimedia event across the campus.Trust me, the newspaper, which I read online,is not anywhere as racy as this issue makes it seem!
