Interests shifting---->Williams, Amherst, Pomona

i posted a thread similar to this but with different colleges two months ago so some of this info may look familiar...plz chance

SAT: 780M 760 CR 660W (kill me on the writing)
SAT II: Math II-800 Biology M-800
ACT: 33
PSAT: 225 (im guessing this means NMSF)

Top ten percent GPA (possibly top 5)
Gigantic Upward Trend
I got raped by a C+ in Spanish II Honors first semester freshman year
GPA (approx). 3.75 (only 3 A's frosh year, straight A's save for one B sophomore year) schedule for jr year looks as though at most 2 B's all school year (including both semesters)

EC's: 3rd Place at United States Karate Federation National Championship Tournament (hook?)
Scholastic Bowl (Captain)
UNICEF (VP)
Model UN (Various Awards)
Snowflake (Very important leadership program for H.S. to teach middle schooler about drugs/alchol)
PE Leader (im pretty sure this doesnt count but what the heck...)
Math Team (went to State Championship freshman year)

Course Load: DEFINTELY HARDEST POSSIBLE
Ap classes taken/taking: AP Chem(5), AP USH (5), AP Biology, AP European History, AP Calculus BC
AP classes sr year: AP Lang, AP Lit, AP Physics C E, AP Physics C M, AP Art History, AP Macroecon, AP Microecon

also will have taken Multivariable Calc

School is very affluent and sends most of top 5% class to ivies or comparable schools

bump.................

Nice. Williams and Pomona you've got a good shot at. Amherst, though...Amherst is fickle. If they decide they don't like you, your amazing stats won't help. So it's a crapshoot.

thanks im a jr and considering ED to Williams next year. does anyone know if the ED acceptance rate is really 33%ish as ive heard? i havent been able to find out online

Williams- High match/match, their middle 50% for W is 660-760, so it's in there, barely
Amherst- Pretty much the same thing, Match
Pomona- Match

CR and M scores are great, but like you said, W hurts you. Everything else looks good. Just realized you were a junior, you still have time!

Chance me please! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/621725-took-risk-blew-any-hope-left.html

only a junior?!?!? jeez. ok well for right now, Williams you got a good chance. Pomona i think you should get in. Amherst is just like what soulside says. but yeah good job! LOL funny PE leader. I wish we had those positions.

It's higher than that according to CollegeBoard.

Number of early decision applications received: 537
Number admitted under early decision plan: 215

= 40%

thanks man that helps a lot. im guessing its also higher cuz those who apply to williams ED tend to self select

considering your good scores, rank, decent ecs and the fact that your school sends its top students to top colleges, i think you have a good chance at all of these schools (and other top schools), i'm not too familiar with small LAC's; however, I would imagine they place a lot of emphasis on the essays, so make sure your's are good and you should be fine (by fine, i mean you have a good chance, nothing is guaranteed though)

Your GPA looks good. Just explain or at least show that you have improved in your foreign language since that debacle with Spanish II Honors.

Your SAT looks really good. 1540 in Verbal/ Math is nothing to laugh about. Your "low" score (are you kidding? its great for the majority of people!) can be overcome by your essays. If you show that you can compose a convincing and compelling essay, your colleges will definitely overlook your writing SAT. A 25 minute essay, cranked out in the early morning, is hardly a true test of your writing abilities anyways.

Your schedule looks incredible. You seemed to have taken Calculus BC your junior year, something which almost nobody does, at least in my state. Getting a good grade in your 1st semester multivariable calculus might give a good impression on your strength in math.

ACT and PSAT is just cruising. SAT II's look awesome. If I was a ad-com, I'd be most impressed by your course load, but your ECs look alright. I like the Karate National Championships 3rd place. Of course I know next to nothing about the prestigiousness of Karate tournaments but if you got 3rd place in anything State or National, that is a definite hook for the colleges. Be sure to emphasize that you have put much effort in your activities, despite your extremely challenging coursework.

I like your chances at Williams, Amherst, and Pomona, but remember, good essays can mean the difference!
Good luck!

thanks i appreciate it! my only concern is the imbalance between each section of my SAT score. didnt mean to offend anyone

Since your writing is still in the interquartile range of Williams, Amherst, and Pomona, and your Math and Critical Reading is among the top, I think the imbalance doesn't matter very much. Remember, in some book estimates, your SAT most likely accounts for less than third of their decision to admit you. Your transcript is great, and that often counts more than the SAT for the Ad-com. Your EC's don't shine, but its still competitive.

I hope you get in!

bump please

Hey daman, here to return the favor! You got a good chance at most of the schools and Ivies.. Considering that you're a junior, and that you have more chances for improving your SAT grades, I think what matters now is how you're going to present yourself in the application essays. There's some time left, so start taking some time to think about yourself and your life. Hope you do well!

bump her up

Nice ECs, great courseload, good SATs. Do all of those schools look at the writing score? Maybe you should apply to at least one school that doesn't. Its no problem though if your essays are good.
Match for all 3 now. But if you're a junior, and keep it up next year (continue ECs and upward trend w/ grades), I'd say you have a great shot at Williams ED.
I don't think think they'll care too much about one C in freshman year. Plus, it's just spanish. I think I got a B- in freshman spanish and you'll probably agree it's the most useless class ever :]

haha yeah. its a prick

If you were in Texas, among a lot of Hispanics, you probably don't want to say that =). My Spanish II class was one of the most challenging classes I've taken, and I've heard that the tests in that class are harder than most school's Spanish 3 tests. Average score in my class on tests is around a D, but Spanish II taught me some real good work ethics and a desire to not fail!

haha spanish isnt the problem. i just have issues taking a language sitting in a desk, filling out worksheets and watching poorly made videos.

I'd say in at all except maybe Amherst...
