Hi there,

I'm a Washington State high school senior (Class of 2015) and am having a bit of a conundrum. I'm super excited to study biomedical engineering as an undergrad, unfortunately all of the schools that I'm applying to seem to fall into two categories: big reach or back-up. I can't seem to find a reasonable intermediate school that I'd be happy attending, and I would love some suggestions/advice.

My requirements for a school are:
-Strong biomedical engineering program and overall engineering
-Strong pre-med advisory
-Liberal-ish (no southern schools)
-All out of state, I know UW is great but I want to experience the world (plus I'm from Boston!)
-Soccer (D2/3 is preferable) - I am a D1 recruit but for me academics come first
-Provides a good opportunity for MD/PhD program entrance
-Preferable rural

A quick resume:
-Published biomedical researcher (bone and minderal research)
-Already received IB diploma
-2x AP scholar with distinction
-ASB President
-2x Varsity Soccer Captain
-7 yr Varsity Club Captain
-Private math tutor
-Elementary school STEM curriculum developer
-Lots of soccer volunteering (350 hrs)
-MIT legacy - parents, grandparents, aunt and uncle!

Scores:
-3.93 gpa (4.71 weighted)
-2230 SAT (800 math, 800 reading, 630 writing lol)
-800 math II, 740 physics

Applying to: (JHU BME, MIT, Brown PLME, Northwestern HPME, Stanford, UPenn, Berkley, UMich, UCSD)

you forgot: what have your parents agreed to contribute to your education each year?

It’s not unusual for students with great scores to struggle to find match and safety schools. Here’s a list of the 90 accredited BME programs. You can find lots of matches here:

???

Which schools fall into the “back up” category??

(and, it’s Berkeley.)

You could add Tulane and UMiami. Tulane is in the south, but it’s not a southern school. Neither is conservative.

You could add UIUC…

Frankly, for a Wash resident who is interested in MD/PhD programs, to avoid UWash is just being short-sighted. You can “see the world” during the summer. You’ll be too busy during the school year to be seeing much off-campus anyway.

UMich and UCSD are my back-ups. Oops on Berkeley* UIUC looks intruiging, thanks!

Thanks for the link! My parents have agreed to pay for all of my undergrad tuition and I have saved up 110k from work and stock investments.

Two additional suggestions:

Case Western could be a safety, and they also would give you great merit aid so you could add to your impressive portfolio.

Northwestern in Evanston, IL. Seems a match, and you could still play soccer or club soccer. Gorgeous campus as a bonus.

Case is fine, but DREARY area…so be warned.
