I will be giving my 10th standard SSC exam (Maharashtra state board) in march this year and am looking at doing PCM for my +2.

I live in Mumbai.

a) I am really interested in mechanical and computer engineering and would love to do an internship this summer to increase my knowledge and give me practical experience. I am a good student with 95% in PCM on bad days. I have also consistently secured the first rank in my school in English, edited my school magazine and written for a reputed student newspaper.

Does anyone have any suggestions or information regarding any firms which offer a suitable summer internship for engineering aspirants?

b) Naturally, I would like to further learn the English language and continue my passion for it through internships/ jr college competitions at the national level.

Which competitions and internships would you recommend for this?

c) I also wish to join IIT classes for 11th and 12th. I have heard that IIT's Pace and Resonance in Mumbai are equally good. What are your recommendations? What are is your opinion about these classes' integrated courses with colleges like Ruia and Ruparel?

I want to stay in Mumbai and am not looking at Kota.

Please note that my desire to do an internship is to really expand my knowledge and explore the subject and not to polish my resume for undergrad. So, please provide options accordingly.

Believe me, JEE coaching is different from anything you might have expected. So dispel any premonitions of it’s ease (or difficulty) before you make a choice. The most major difference is that you will be expected to study everything on your own. It may sound innocuous to you now but when you actually face the mammoth never-seen-before syllabus it can be a very daunting. Even though the most difficult time period is the initial time period, it is imperative that you stick to the preparation as you will adapt to this new style of study within one year (end of 11th).

Since I have no idea about Mumbai - I was in Delhi. I had joined Vidyamandir Regular (200 students selected out of 10k) and have learned that it’s not so much the coaching classes as how much time you spend solving questions. For example, FIITJEE in Delhi accepts more students to their top batches and so more of my friends enrolled their, but to compare the quality of education would not be fair since they are at par.

So just make sure, whichever coaching classes you join, studying on your own is the most important thing and also try to stay up to date with the coaching classe’s tests and classes.

Other important tips:

I am not writing all this to scare you. I am saying that if you do it right, you’ll be a pro at all these things by 11th’s end.

If you are thinking of applying to US universities as well, and so want to show your proficiency at the English language, you can take the TOEFL and IELTS tests in 10th grade and prepare for them over the summer instead of finding internships. I can’t really imagine any company enthusiastic a 9th class graduate giving a significant internship. If I were you, I would start prepping for the SAT (in the holidays) or complete at least 1 chapter in each of Physics, Chem and Math for the JEE.
