Internal transfer to Smith Business School

I was accepted into University of Maryland, but not admitted into the business school. I had an 1890 SAT with just a 1230 M+CR so I guess that's why I wasn't admitted directly. My 2 questions are:
1.) Is there anyway they will reconsider me even though my SAT doesn't fit their requirements?
2.) How hard is it to internally transfer into the Smith school of business? I heard you need atleast a 3.5 gpa and that it is ultra competitive. How hard would it be to get that gpa?

I was already accepted to Penn State Smeal so I might just go there and not have to stress about not making it into the business school. What are your thoughts?

First of all congratulations on your admission to the university! I think it is unlikely that they will reconsider you at Smith unless you have something new to tell them. Do you have any new SAT scores that they didn’t see, did your GPA rise dramatically, did you revamp your schedule to include more difficult classes? In my opinion these are the types of things that could possibly change your outcome, and even then I wouldn’t think that they would reverse their decision. This is not to say that you’re not very bright and capable. I’m sure that you are! I just think they made a decision based on your entire application and because Smith has very limited seats available, admission is very competitive. As you mentioned you need to keep a high GPA in order to apply as an internal transfer. It is very competitive like you said so there are no guarantees. But hey, they gotta take some people so there’s no reason it can’t be you if you are willing to work very hard. I think it is very important to have a backup plan though just in case you aren’t admitted. Penn State and Smeal are great! Which school do you like better? You have two great schools to choose from so in that sense you are lucky. Also are you in state for either?

I internally transferred into smith last year. I applied with a 3.65 GPA and was accepted. It’s a little stressful, but as long as you don’t disregard your studies you should be able to get in no problem. Shoot for above a 3.5 GPA and join some clubs.

If you are instate Maryland I wouldn’t go to Penn State. Getting into smith is really just about maintaining a GPA above a 3.5, which isn’t that difficult for a smart individual such as yourself.
