How difficult is it to transfer internally to the business school with a decent GPA from a government and politics major? Is the acceptance generally good?

I think it will take more than a “decent” GPA (think really good GPA), but I’ll defer to those who know more than me on this… for any of the LEPs, I think you’d have to prove that you’re a committed student that changes their mind about why they didn’t originally accept you (or, if you didn’t originally apply, your credentials would need to be near the people they did accept directly into the program).

I’m already in an LEP. I just wanted to switch to business.

but seeing as i just started as a freshman now, do you think they could try to get me into the major earlier?

My understanding is if you did not get in as a freshman then you have to wait and apply as a junior.

In addition to a minimum GPA of 3.5 (last I heard), there are a number of core courses that must be completed before applying for the internal transfer. Definitely stop by the advising office at the Smith School to inquire if you can’t find it online.

Officially you need a 3.5, but 3.0 is sort of the unwritten rule. Definitely swing by the Undergraduate Advising Office in the Smith School, they’d be happy to help.

Ask for Ebony Fullwood, she’s the best.

You have to take all the entry-requirement classes and have at least 60 credits before you can apply to Smith. Each student can only apply once, so when you think you’re ready to apply check with an advisor to be sure you can! I talked with the letters and sciences business rep and he told me that a lot of people get rejected because they haven’t fulfilled the requirements for admissions when they applied.

Here’s the fresh/soph curriculum:

I was told that the minimum cumulative GPA you need to be considered for the business school is a 3.0. My advice is to aim for around a 3.5 at least though, because I’ve heard from many, many people that it is difficult to get into Smith and that a guy with a 3.6 was rejected.

Good luck!

My s transferred into the Smith School during his first semester at UMCP. From what I gathered at the time it was pretty straight forward. I believe they looked at his HS record and SATs. At that point he didn’t actually have a college GPA.

Now that you mention it, my friend told me that last year a bunch of the guys she knows went to smith’s office and admissions just let them in.
