internal transfer

hi im currently a seas freshman who, after taking the freshman engineering core, hates it. i want to transfer to the college and major in either econ, biology, or neuroscience. is an internal transfer possible/easy?

Sorry that you hate engineering! It’s a common realization for freshman all around the country so don’t consider yourself inept or stupid.

The internal transfer process involves submitting an application just as you would if you were trying to transfer from UC Berkeley. This involves your HS transcript, SAT scores, essays, and recommendations. Additionally, you’ll probably need to write an essay describing why you want to transfer.

Some say the internal transfer process is set up so that it deters students who aren’t serious about switching out of engineering, i.e. it’s fairly easy to get in as long as you fill out the application. However, from what I’ve seen, it is extremely competitive and difficult to transfer into the College from SEAS unless you have a compelling reason. You need to tell the committee why you’re suited for the College and what major you would like to pursue that is not even tangentially related to anything offered in SEAS.

The difference between Economics and IEOR is too small for them to respect, as is the difference between biology/neuroscience vs BME. You’ll need to tell them you want to study English, History, Political Science, etc., i.e. a course of study that requires different thinking entirely. Good luck with the process. I would reach out to your adviser right now. However, I have a hunch that he/she has heard the complaints many times before but really can’t help with anything except direct you to a website.

Not sure if this is a helpful anecdote, but I knew someone in SEAS a few years back who wanted to transfer to CC because he loved math but absolutely hated engineering. I’m not sure the exact difficulties he ran into, but he found the process so troublesome he ended up giving up and staying in SEAS.

well, architecture, french, sustainable development, and linguistics also are on my list. i would probably go with one of those on the application. what sort of GPA would I be expected to have? (please dont flame me for this question. i really am working hard but i am having a difficult time with these classes :l )

With that set of interests, maybe you should consider a transfer to Barnard?
