Hello! I was hoping that someone could possibly tell me a bit about the international affairs program at MHC in comparison to other colleges. I know that it's very good in terms of diversity and international support, but does anyone have any first or secondhand experience with the international affairs program? Or study abroad? Also, I'd really like to double major in Arabic, but I saw that MHC only offers a minor. Does anyone happen to know if an Arabic major would be offered through the five college consortium program? I'm sorry, I don't understand it very well and it gets a bit overwhelming.
Thank you! ^-^i

Hello! I am a current senior at Mount Holyoke. While I am not an international relations major, I am a politics major with an international focus and therefore I have had quite a bit of experience with the IR department. As you mentioned, the IR department at mtholyoke is very good! Mtholyoke offers a wide variety of interesting courses to fulfill the requirements of the major. While I cannot speak to it in comparison to other colleges, I can say that the department is very strong with some of the best professors at the institution. As far as studying abroad, mtholyoke strongly encourages all students–especially IR majors–to take advantage of the great programs we are affiliated with abroad. Because so many students do go abroad the program is well established and funding is usually quite generous!

As far as the Arabic major, you are correct that mtholyoke does not offer an Arabic major. There is, however, a Middle Eastern Studies major that I believe includes Arabic courses. Additionally, there is an option at mtholyoke to create your own major. If you can come up with a prospective curriculum/outline of what you would take and when, you may be able to create a major that focuses on Arabic.

I hope this helped a bit! Feel free to respond with any questions you may still have!

@rsfarley thank you so much! I didn’t know that you could create a major there either… I’d actually taken Mount Holyoke off my college lists, but thanks to your info it’s going back on and I’m going to visit next month! :)

MHC is part of a consortium. This offers some info. http://www.umass.edu/llc/related_programs/ At most colleges, you need to dig into the course catalog to see just how much Arabic they offer. The link notes you can take four years- you would need to check details. A young friend recently graduated; spent study abroad in Jordan.
