So I am a current International Affairs major in my sophomore year. However, I would like to add something a bit more quantitative/‘grounded’ to my studies. I am able to declare Computer Science as a second major, a field that greatly interests me, but I am curious if having a degree in “International Affairs & Computer Science” will be treated as an actual IT degree. For example, Department of State IT jobs have ‘BA/BS Degree in Information Technology related field’ but I am unclear whether or not my degree would be considered an IT-related one for a position like that, or simply an IA major that I took some CS classes with.
I’m assuming your degree would be a B.A. in IA (your home school?) with a secondary major in CS. Some employers might interpret that as CS-lite, but that’s what a cover letter is for when applying for jobs (to briefly explain your background/credentials). Anyway, the CS major would be a great supplement to your primary focus area in IA. Isn’t that what you’re intending? If you wanted to focus on IT jobs, I suppose you’d be doing a B.S. degree in CS or doing a double degree. Note that you could probably double minor in CS and statistics, too, which might offer a broader skillset to employers than CS alone (if your primary employment focus is IA).
