So, AP results are all out.
How did ye'all Internationals do?
A thread devoted to any discussion on APs for the Int'ls!

its possible to do aps as an international??? how's that possible??

APs are offered in most countries. I did them in Chennai in India.
There might not be an AP centre in your city. In that case contact the school administering the exams in the city closest to yours. They'll let you take the exam at their centre.
You need to register in March and the exams are in May.

I took them in aus
Im not sure when they're supposed to arrive..
I took eng language and calc ab

Expecting 5 on calc ab and 3 on eng lang (it was really hard!).. ok maybe even a 2. (it was like really really hard)

hm... this is weird... well, I live in Germany and I'm doing the Abitur which is more advanced than the AP tests, but do u think I'd be impressive to still take APs?? The thing is no AP classes are offered in Germany, so I dont really kno how to register and practice for the test

You can take the exams without having taken the corresponding classes and there are enough books that can be used as self-study guides. However, I don't know if AP exams are offered here at all, but according to the Collegeboard site, you can get a list of local AP coordinators by contacting them.

You'll probably receive extra credit for the Abitur as well (depending on your classes and grades of course. It's all up to your school), so I can't really see the point in taking AP exams.

Well... I'm not really worrying about college credit, but rather about admissions... probably it would look good, if I took AP exams, cos I don't really have to but did it any ways...

btw thomas, where r u from, and what colleges are u applying to?

pearfire, around about march, email collegeboard about the AP coordinators. They'll give you the list of the nearest ones.
I selfstudied both exams by just using 2 prep books for each subject. I mainly used the practice tests in the books.. however for ap calc, I started studying for it with very small knowledge on calc since the school system is the jan-dec style and I didnt get to learn any of the advanced calc stuff in (normal) calc class at that time... (actually, we're learning the material NOW). Yeah so learning adv calc was hard.

You'll be ok for aps if you've already learnt the materials in school.

Well, yeah, but you said yourself that the Abitur is more advanced than AP tests. If you let WES evaluate your transcripts, colleges will see that. I don't think that taking exams about stuff that was alrady covered in school and you received grades for would improve your chances.

I'm from Koblenz (near Cologne). I'm not applying anywhere, I'll try to get into Berkeley or maybe Stanford as a transfer from SMC.

Who or wut is WES?? and wut does SMC stand for? wow... berkeley and stanford are both amazing colleges, but keep in mind that they are stingy when it comes to to intel admission... so unless ur super rich and can afford full tuition and everything, u r gonna have a hard time, especially as a transfer...

Stands for "World Education Services". They evaluate your transcripts for you. So, if you do your Abitur, you can send your transcripts in and they'll provide you with a course-by-course evaluation, calculate your US GPA, find equivalent US classes to subjects you've taken and so on. This is necessary to receive credits for your Abitur. Their report is then sent to your college.

I know. My aim is Berkeley, because getting into Stanford as a transfer is almost impossible (they accept like 4,5%). I'll try though. However, if I do good at SMC, I'll probably have a decent shot at Berkeley. I plan to take some classes during summer there too.

Yea... Berkeley is great, but they're a state school, and even if u get in, how r u gonna pay for it, its very very stingy, so I dont think they will provide u with enough money

Ok.. so when do the test scores usually arrive for intels..? the further away it is, the happier I will be..

I'm going to Berkeley next fall and I can confirm that they are very stingy with financial aid for internationals. Internationals can't even apply for financial aid. They pick a few for what's called a Regents and Chancellor's Scholarship but you need very high SAT scores and it's very hard to get as an international. I don't even think it's available for transfer students, you'll have to ask.

I'm not relying on financial aid. I probably wouldn't even apply for financial aid, because no one knows how that would affect my chances for admission.

How I am gonna pay for it? Loans or maybe a scholarship.
I'm willing to take those loans for a great education.

Hmm...So, Here are my results:
Physics C-E&M- 5
Physics C-Mech- 5
Chem- 5
Calculus BC- not evaluated due to delays.

With these I get to skip 1 course in Mech, 1 in E&M (2 Phys courses in all), 1 od a choice of 2 in Chem, and if I get a 4 or 5 (Oh god! Please ... pretty please let me cross a 4!) in Math, 1 course in Math. 1 course usually lasts 1 semester.
So, for those who want to know to what extent APs are useful, it shd be similar your place. So, they're pretty valuable as you get skip almost 1 yr of Physics and Chem!!!

For those who didn't take AP courses,
Nor did I. I did CBSE syllabus (Indian syllabus) and went and just did the exam. So, I guess you should be fine. The grading bell's pretty linient too.

Lastly, APs are important for 1 more reason- FINANCIAL AID.
Now, a strong AP score will help you in gaining fin aid after you join college.

@NoFX, I called them up at the number given in the AP Hand Book. I got Physics results on Friday and my Chem results on Monday. BC shd be out by the end the week, I hope.

@_thomas, You seriously should consider more schools than just UCB and Stanford (both are very stingy with aid).
The most liberal is P'ton (unfortunately, they don't accept transfers. But, u can reapply as a freshman).
Also, give a look at places like UT Austin, GA Tech, UPenn, Dartmouth and all which are very good.

^ did you pay $8 or is it free for intels? (great scores!)

Thanks NoFX.
You have to make $8 for each call you make.

do Georgiatech give aid to intels i thought it was public college.
