International Boarding School

Anybody else going to school outside the country? If so, what was your experience and any tips to adjusting?

What boarding school are you going to?

I currently attend an international school and my school has boarding facilities so I have friends who are boarders.

Int’l BS’s, like U.S. BS’s, vary widely in their character. In the U.S., you find the focus of BS may be academics, or discipline, or sports, or tradition, or whatever…

Caveats about some thorny issues :

A fair number of int’l BS’s cater to non-English-speaking kids—to get them proficient in English.

A fair number of kids from breathtakingly wealthy families from very corrupt, less developed countries attend int’l BS (Yes, U.S. BS’s have their share of rotten kids from super-rich American families, too). Have encountered these ultra-spoiled int’l kids in int’l day school. Some (not all) of these rich int’l kids are in a class apart—they are totally obnoxious… They brag of how they beat their maids or how many Ferraris they have. That said, have also met many truly kind, humble, well-grounded, rich int’l kids.

There are many wonderful int’l BS’s. Just as you would for selecting a BS in the U.S., determine what your focus is in selecting an int’l BS.
