I'm not technically a "traditional" international student. My parents and I immigrated to the US from Eritrea when I was about 1 1/2 years old. The only problem is that I recently (as in about a year) found out that I'm not a legal US resident. Apparently, my parents and I overstayed our diplomatic visas when I was younger, and I found out when I was trying to get docs for a learner's permit.

I've lived here all my life and I definitely plan on going to college this year. Is this going to kill me in the admissions process?

Here are my stats:
SAT: 740 CR 730 M 780 W
AP: World Hist - 5, Psych - 5, US History - 5, Eng Lit - 4
Pending/Current (all Aps): Calc, Spanish, Environmental Science, American Gov, English
GPA: 4.19 W 3.97 UW
Rank: Top 2% 14/600

I have a good list of ECs (with leadership positions) and awards, but I won't go into detail (privacy).

These are schools I'm looking at:
U of Chicago
William and Mary
Dartmouth
Amherst
Bryn Mawr
Virginia Tech
Cornell
Oberlin
Drexel
Hofstra

Thanks, I kind of figured about the reaches. It sucks because those schools are my best shot at getting finaid and not to sound annoying, but why is W&M a reach? Their average SAT is about a 2000. I’m still not 100% whether I’m considered in or OOS but I didn’t think it would be as impossible as like Dartmouth

I had to roughly estimate some of your stats, as you provided insufficient information to perform an actual chance.

Assuming you are counted as a non-international student, and that your essays are awesome:
U of Chicago - 46%
William and Mary - 93%
Dartmouth - 33%
Amherst - 41%
Bryn Mawr - Can’t get this one for some reason.
Virginia Tech - basically 100%
Cornell - 48%
Oberlin - 70%
Drexel - 100%
Hofstra - 100%

My source (parchment) gives the same chance if you are an Eritrean going to an American high school, but I’m not sure if that’s right. Someone else might clarify that.

I assumed your ECs were the average Harvard-caliber (/oxymoron) ECs.

U Chicago: Low reach (pay attention to your essays)
W&M: Low match
Dartmouth: Low reach
Amherst: Reach
Bryn Mawr: Low match
VA Tech: Safety
Cornell: High match
Oberlin: Match
Drexel: Safety
Hofstra: Safety

@Philovitist I definitely wouldn’t call my ECs Harvard-caliber (I don’t have any international recognition/awards or anything like that). I have many school awards and a couple of national awards (for academics, like being recognized for the National Achievement Scholarship-PSAT). I’m in a few of the National Honor Socities, Model UN, school newspaper, volunteered with health department, etc. Will not having one REALLY super extraordinary EC hurt my chances at the more competitive schools?

My transcript is all As with one or two A-s each year (usually only 1, in spanish haha). But I got a B in Algebra 1 because I took it in 8th grade (and it counts as a hs credit) and wasn’t thinking about high school/college at all. But that’s my only B
