I am from China,Mainland.
I have graduated from high school since June,2007.

SAT MATH800 CR530 (does UT look into WR?)
SATII MATHII 800 PHYSICS760 CHEMISTRY800
Toefl 107/120
Rank 40/650
I am in the school math experimental class,so the GPA is low,but I don't think they will give much attention to it because Chinese exams are very different from American ones. The rank is among all the students in my school so it is weighed.

I like UT very much. The academia seems great and the climate is very like that in my hometown.UT is my first choice.
The only thing I worry about is my CR score.Since I only decided to apply to US universities in the late June,I have little time to prepare.

My general major first choice is math. But the UT's computer science program seems greater and there is a honor program called Turing Scholar program which I like very much.So now I have a hard time deciding which major I should apply for.Is the computer science department much more competitive than the math department? And do I have a chance to get in the Turing Scholar program?(I know my test scores really don't look fine)

I have heard of a tuition waive scholarship which intl students could apply for in the second year.
I have found it in the website but I don’t know what is the real situation. Is the scholarship very competitive? How many students could get it?
My family is not rich,so I eagerly need the it.

You aren’t a native English speaker, so lower scores won’t hurt you as much. And with the exception of your SAT CR score, you have excellent/amazing scores. UT doesn’t use writing. I’m not familiar with the TOEFL so I can’t say whether that will be good enough. And it may be different for international applicants, but for US applicants they don’t look at GPA at all. Your rank is very good, so you should be okay.

I’m not sure which program is more competitive to get in to, but both are in natural science, which is the third least competitive (after Education and Liberal Arts).

Turing Scholars is good. I don’t know their policies, but I’d think you have a shot. You may also want to look into the Dean’s Scholars program for Natural Sciences.

I think it’s pretty competitive, but there are actually more international students than out-of-state students, and OOS students have a 30% shot at getting in.

I think you are good, and with your ECs and test scores the natural sciences honors programs may be a good chance.

you’ve got good stats and im pretty sure you’ll get into math or cs. I am a turing scholar and it is a very competitive program. I am not sure about Math, but the cs honors program is really good. I think that with your scores you should be able to get into the turing scholars program.

And niyantha_1988
I want to pursue a phd degree after undergraduate,so do you know something about it?
Are there many students from turing scholars program go to top grad schools?

Are the regular admission and honor admission seperated?Could I select math as my first chioce while apply to turing scholars at the same time?I have viewed the Dean’s Scholars program for Natural Sciences, but I found that the curriculum includes core requirements such as biology.I really don’t like biology…:(

That actually could pose a huge problem…I’d think that Turing Scholars would like CS to be your #1 choice. I’d ask them once the break is over.

And applying to honors programs is completely separate. You have to fill out a short application, and often they ask for a resume, interview, and additional reccomendation letters.

The honors app really doesn’t give them much more info that they don’t already have. I think it’s simply used so that honors program don’t have to go through 30,000 apps, only those of kids who are interested in the program.

The essays are 3/7 of the Personal Achievement Index (your ECs, leadership, and awards are the other 4/7).

It makes a difference, but the academics are very important. From what I’ve heard, it’s easier to get in with a lower PAI and higher Academic Index than vice versa. If you had perfect essays and great ECs, but were ranked in the bottom half and only had an average SAT score, you probably wouldn’t get in. However, if you were really average in the essays and ECs, but had a high SAT score and were highly ranked (top ten for international, just outside for in-state), you probably would.

And
I see the Turing program’s requirement
It needs an essay F,but I can’t see the essay F anywhere…
Where could I find it…I have only found essay A,B,C,D,E
