International Development question?

Hey, in the course catalog if you are an International Development major it says required courses are: ECON 208, ECON 313, ECON 314, INTD 200, & INTD497. Okay, so my question is, we're not allowed to take INTD 200 as freshmen, are we? Because it's not listed in the approved courses list for freshmen (<a href="http://www.mcgill.ca/artscisao/freshman/selection/artstudents/approved/)%5B/url%5D">http://www.mcgill.ca/artscisao/freshman/selection/artstudents/approved/)</a>. But it just seems weird to me b/c, c'mon, it's Introduction to International Development!!, it should be a freshman course, shouldn't it?

P.S. I might crosspost this to LJ and/or MySpace, just to warn you ;)

You can take it, it's just not one of the approved courses. The courses you take first year have to be of a certain requirement so not following those specifications may lead to slight complications later on. I technically can't graduate because of a couple of unapproved courses I took first year but that can be made up later on.

I don't understand...what can be made up later on? So we technically could take courses not on the list? What are the consequences?

Okay, lets say first year you're required to take 4 courses in Breadmaking but you only decide to take 3 because you wanted to take INTD200. You now cannot graduate because you did not fulfill the first year requirement (it will say something like that on your transcript on Minerva). However, you can take the fourth breadmaking class in a later year and fufill your requirement.

And yes, you technically could take a course that is not on the list as long as you have the prerequesites. Most low 200 level courses don't have prereqs so they should be available to all first years even if they are not approved.
