International experience for engineers

I'm a high school senior planning to study engineering at Stanford. After graduation, I want to work at an engineering firm that gives me assignments abroad. What should I major in, and what companies should I work for?

I know I'm really naive at this point, but I'm just looking for general suggestions. I love traveling around and experiencing different cultures, which I would like to incorporate into my work.

Thanks in advance!

I know there are some people in the civil engineering community that get to travel abroad sometimes. A friend of mine (civil enginering major) is now working for a large construction management firm, and he said after 5 years with the company, he can get international assignments. Some people at my company (same industry) get to travel too sometimes, but they aren't stationed abroad. It's usually just a trip to inspect a critical process in the procruement of materials. For example, one of my co-workers went to Italy to take a look at marble from a quarry before purchasing it and shipping it over here.

Funny you're going to Stanford... I've been working on some research for the past year or so, and it relates to how civil engineering projects are becoming global and the impact of different cultures working together. Quite a few of the papers that I've found and read have authors with a connection to Stanford's CRGP - Collaboratory for Research on Global Projects. I'm not sure if you can get involved with that as undergrad though, but it certainly is interesting.

Thanks for the reply. Anyone has international experience in other disciplines?
