International finaid

Hi - let me introduce my situation. I live in Hong Kong but our family has recently received the US Visa so one we 'land' we will become permanent residents. However, we are not landing in the US until late July. I am therefore going to apply for financial aid as an international student.

My parents and I are currently filling in the International student financial aid form, and we were unsure of what to fill in for the boxes for what we THINK we can afford. Our family is middle class in Hong Kong. My parents earn around 200K US dollars a year. However, my older sister is also in university so they have to pay for her tuition as well, which is about 38K+ a year. I know we have relatively high income, and if I didn't receive any financial aid my parents could probably still afford it, but with difficulty. If I don't receive aid, I probably won't be able to attend this school.

What do we fill in for these boxes then? If my parents can, in theory, "afford" to pay that much, then is there no point in applying for aid at all? Please reply ASAP... the deadline is looming !! >< thanks!

bump. someone pls reply :(

I doubt you'll get financial aid if your parents make 200k.

You consider yourself middle class? The median income in Hong Kong is $31,000: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_household_income. It's time to step out of your bubble. There are many people out there who are truly middle and lower class that actually need financial aid to even consider a private school.

Sorry I made a mistake in the conversion. They make USD 120K . I realize that's still more than a lot of people but I'm not expecting for a full ride scholarship or anything - maybe around 10K or something, in grants or loans.

I believe WashU does give financial aid to an extent if a sibling is in college at the same time.

I'm doubting you'll get anything. I'm a US citizen whose parents make 100K a year...and I got jack squat.

just out of curiosity, kjanebarnum - do you have a sibling in college as well?

Yeah, but in grad school.
