do you guys know how selective northwestern is when it comes to international students who need financial aid? how many international students who need financial aid are admitted, etc

NU is needs blind, as is almost every school in America. This means that Northwestern will evaluate your application without even looking at your financial status/needs. After you are accept then the financial aid stuff happens. So you need to ask how selected NU is when it comes to International students. Financial aid has nothing to do with admissions and they will not hold you to a tougher standard or anything because you are hurting for money. I got in ED and I found that NU was very generous. Other I have talked to say similar things. So dont worry about money. What country are you from btw?

From: http://www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/intl/applying/apply_intl.htm#aid

"There are two Regular Decision applicant pools for foreign students: those not applying for financial aid (self-funded) who will be considered for admission along with U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents, and those applying for financial aid who will be considered in a separate process for a limited number of places in the entering class. Because we can admit only a small percentage of the hundreds of qualified applicants who need financial aid, we will make admission decisions based on the amount of aid needed. Unfortunately, some applicants will not be offered admission simply because no funds are available even though they are otherwise well-qualified."

thanks, nan. i read the info on the website, but i was wondering if anybody knows specific info, like about how many international students they give finaid to and how high their stats have to be (a LOT higher than average?). so the amount of aid needed is a big factor of admission for international students who need financial aid?

You'll probably have a hard time finding a reliable source for that info, since this is only the second year NU has offered financial aid to international students. I suspect they're still figuring some of that out.

My guess, is if your stats are above a certain level it will be other factors that determine admission. You can drive yourself crazy fretting over a few gpa or test points, when they won't matter. NU seems to look at the whole package, putting a lot of weight on the essays and such.

If you have any serious questions about your application, contact the admissions office, and they will surely help you.

I am an international on financial aid here. Last year they admitted 10 internationals on financial aid, and about 150 without aid. They are indeed 2 distinct groups and admission is tougher for the smaller one. So your stats should be pretty much above average to be chosen among the 10 with aid.

wow, their stats must be a LOT higher than average.. do you mind sharing yours..?

Sure, I PM-ed them. Stats are not everything, though.
