international financial aid

Recently i got accepted to Wash U. I am an international student and applied for a lot of financial aid ( pretty much asked for a free ride). I didn't apply for any merit scholarship. I am wondering if Wash U already made financial aid decisions before they admitted me, or they are determining my financial aid award afterwards, like now. In the latter case, is it possible that they somehow underestimate my need before and therefore cannot give me the amount of award i need.

WashU states they are "need aware", yet i don't know to what extent that implies.

Last year, a friend of mine applied [intl, same school] and he got 33% aid, but he needed more than that. so he simply couldn't attend. And i think the aid is also sort of merit-based as well.

But if they couldn't give you the amount you needed, or something reasonably close to that, you'd probably have been waitlisted.

ok, i just got my acceptance package along with a letter from the financial aid office. I applied for tons of financial aid. Since Wash U is a need-aware school and they accepted, I expected that they a least meet a decent amount of my need. But when I opened up the letter, I was shocked and tremendously dissapointed. It says in the letter that "we are sorry that we are unable to offer you any financial asistance award", which means they don't have a single penny to help me. I asked for probably 40k, I would deal with it even if they gave me only 30k, or less. But now they tell me that I have to pay the full tuition on my own. This is just ridiculously outrageous! There is no way that I can afford to go there.

alwaysfaithful, i'm really sorry about this unpleasantly surprising news. it really baffles me how they can admit a student and do such a thing. at least, i expected they would give you something. i really don't understand....that's why i said earlier that i don't really know how "need aware" they are....

...and fees for 2006/07 are just a little over 50k. i'm baffled. :(

Jrock,

I am not sure where you come up with the 50K figure. According to the WashU official site the following applies for 2006 - 2007:

Tuition: $32,800
Student Activity Fee: $328
Student Health Fee: $660
Total Charges (excluding room and board): $33,788
Average University Room and Board: $10,452
Total Charges (including room and board): $44,240

This is what it is says on my admission letter:

"You should be aware that tuition and fees for the 2006-07 academic year are $33,788 and living expenses (including summer) are approximately $16,400 per year."

sorry, i was also considering summer exp. which could be about 3k....so at least 46.8k

what the hell, alwaysfaithful?

If I don't get any financial aid either, I won't be able to go.

...I hope that doesn't happen.

edit:/// oh...this is for internationals.........My bad. I'm really sorry.

johnnydr87:

How could WashU deny financial aid if you are WashU's main suck up.

That's completely true. I don't think they're legally allowed to do such a thing.

ISN'T WASHU GREAT?!?!?!?!?! LOLZ!

.......

Oh yes, I defended "OMFG Wash U is overranked cue frothing at the mouth and seizure" attacks on that other thread.

Other than that, there's nothing that separates me from any other excited WashU admittee.

Would it help much if I call the financial aid office?

Perhaps alwaysfaithful.....but I'm not really sure. Explaining your financial situation and how WashU is one of your top choices might help...

It couldn't hurt (the situation), but they might tell you that they can't offer aid (again).

Since this is your last gambit to get into WashU, you might as well go through with it. Good luck.

I wanted to have Wash. as my top choice/s but need-aware thing made me reconsider I wil apply somewhere eles OMG ths univ is stingy as hell
