International Financial Aid?

<p>So, when you're filling out the Common App, and you choose the option YES, I will be applying for Financial Aid, a little pop-up informs you that you must then provide your SSN number on the Common App as well.</p>

<p>Thing is, I'm from Canada, so we don't have SSNs, but we <em>do</em> have SINs. So I'm confused as to whether or not to fill in the SSN part of the Common App. </p>

<p>But tell me if I'm wrong, the SSN is only for the FASFA, and not the individual school's financial aid packages?</p>

<p>I’m a Canadian as well, and I had the same question!
Are we supposed to leave it blank, and expect that they know we’re Canadian and don’t have one?
(I haven’t started filling out my CSS profile yet…maybe I’ll find the answer there)</p>

<p>I am not sure who told you that you could apply for FASFA because when my D tried she was quickly told that Canadians do not qualify. It is the same OSAP for Ontario, an American Student cannot apply. I would definetly check with the college financial department but as I said we contacted FASFA directly and were told no. There is very little if any financial aid for Canadians (internationals) going to the States other than merit and you could apply for Canadian Student loan.</p>

<p>FYI, the following schools are needs-blind for international students, but offer only need-based and not merit-based aid:</p>

<p>MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, and Amherst College.</p>

<p>Some colleges and universities use the FAFSA formula to determine need-based aid for international students. Contact each of the places that you are applying to, and ask them about this. They will be able to give you instructions for handling the FAFSA in your particular case.</p>
