International Huntsman Program/Wharton ED Applicant

Hey vehenslucem!

Yes they are, and they are very very good conferences.
But they are called local conferences, with VMUN only being slightly more continental (attracting US students). ConnectMUN and CAHSMUN both did not have any US delegates last year. (worked as secretariat - so do know what goes on in the marketing)

CAIMUN does extend to Mexico, China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, etc.

Continental = international, though.

sure you can take it that way. I guess we are aiming for a true international scope by extending it beyond continents :)

I’m thinking, everyone’s point is that wouldn’t it be inappropriate to claim your conference as the “first international” conference?

HAHA you claimed urself as an avid social networker as a piece of ur credentials. is that a joke?! i wish i could be acclaimed by colleges for spending time on facebook and twitter. Id get in everywhere! good thing i listed party-goer (“networking friends and successfully wooing females”) and call of duty xbox player (“diplomatic official in aiding international relations and even preventing world destruction and furthering world peace”).

and someone noted the additional hilarity- ur responses declaring that ur not pretentious were quite pretentious. good times

Haha, I’m an avid diplomatic official ^^

The social networking stuff was pretty funny too. And yes, OP is very pretentious.

imma count how many times ppl post ‘pretentious’ - way too funny to see posters judging others by scanning through internet forums, mocking posters with what others felt and wrote

don’t stop. keep judging guys!

K. You have an unentitled sense of self-worth. Judging from your change from 9000 word responses to simple paragraphs with a lax use of grammar, you realize that your attempt to look witty and intelligent over the internet has been unsuccessful. At first you wanted to impress us with your mastery of the english language, but you came off as a kid who didn’t really know how to use a thesaurus. If you came off like this in your Why Penn essay then I don’t expect that you will be admitted. So, since this is a chance thread, I don’t think your chances are great.

@dfree
Actually bud, just from reading your post, you seem like you have more of an “unentitled sense of self-worth” than the OP. Im sure noone wants to impress you or anyone else over an internet forum. OP is trying to resolve the situation and you decide to reopen the discussion. Oh, if you come off like this in real life then I dont expect you to have many friends. See what I did there?

2/10 for getting me to respond

thank you oblivion - you nicely phrased what I’ve been feeling for the whole thread, but could not express just becuase I didn’t want to be called pretentious for everything I write. To be honest, I had no idea how harsh and intimidating people at cc are. but it’s probably not the people who are inimidating, but the internet that’s taking away the normal politeness, the casual courteousness people abide by in real society, that’s rendering forum users appear rash and inconsiderate of others.

Anyways, just would like to point out, thank you for going against this flow of unjustified name-calling. quite appreciate it. :)

-facepalm-
Wow, I can’t believe I’m reviving this thread but really? CC-ers are “harsh and intimidating” because the way you type/talk is not expected from a high school senior in a chance me thread and that you seem to make every accomplishment of yours so SIGNIFICANT (which makes you seem pretentious; go find a dictionary definition of that word, btw) and that’s not really necessary.

I think somewhere in this thread, you’ve proved to posters here that you don’t always write pretentiously, so don’t put on an online persona of using flowery language and complex syntax. There’s really no need to do so in a forum like this.

Joining the ‘Occupy X’ movement might not show that you’re a good fit for Wharton.

koharvard, how do you type and look through a thesaurus at the same time?

I think more important than stats is your social presence and if you can’t get along with people who might be your classmates, this can be a problem. Your attitude will show in your essay, so seriously, consider the advice of ccers and don’t take everything as an offense.

So uh, guys, just chill. Seriously.

OP - the accomplishments you have under your belt are impressive, and you’re obviously a top-notch student. Although this is a highly competitive program, I’d say you’re a contender, and best of luck.

Everyone else - the OP is obviously very intelligent, and possesses a vast lexicon. Or at least, let’s just assume that instead of “hurr nice thesaurus bro” because honestly, it’s probably true. “OP is using very sophisticated language” → Occam’s razor → “OP has a very large vocabulary.”

If you’re interested, OP, your tone (in text) does come off as somewhat stilted, and occasionally unnatural or possibly pretentious. My guess is that this tone is a function of you being ESL, and no doubt you’ll conquer this as you move on through life. Nevertheless, we’re comparing you to “perfect”: your writing ability is well above average.

Your stilted cadence, combined with the impressive array of accomplishments, probably led some CCers to peg you as “pretentious”. Meh. I think that’s the accomplishments speaking more than your writing, so you’re just genuinely impressive, not pretentious. That being said, if you’re interested, as I explained above there are kernels of truth here for you to work on. The only remaining controversy is whether you’re overblowing your achievements here (“first international conference”, “avid social networker”, etc)
and honestly, what are we /all/ trying to do in the college app process? Hint: sell ourselves as a product.

lastcall: interesting viewpoint. I did mention in my why upenn essay that I plan on studying ‘business and public policy’ and ‘legal studies and business ethics’ because those are the areas i am passionate about (the combination of politics and business). from reading chomsky’s profit over people, (and other books as well) I realized that there is something very wrong with the intersection of public policy and the world of coporations. If you would like to read a published editorial that I wrote (it’s about my personal opinions on society’s state of managed democracy), I could defs send it to you over cc message :)

flyingtomato: i never use thesaurus - i think that using it (maybe varying on the amount of use) makes a writing derivative, and somewhat not creative.

alex: nope. i do not take everything as offense. but as you mentioned, i do take everything personally, because i always seek ways to improve myself. So when ccers make rude claims about others, I don’t take that lightly. look through all the previous posts and evaluate the tone many of the posters carry: if they want to give an advice, don’t go off saying “blindly repulsive” "is that a joke (relating my stats to playing cod and partying) “OP is very pretentious” “you have an unentitled sense of self-worth”

seriously guys? alex, these are not the type of classmates that will be accepted to Upenn. Not at all. When one writes to others, be it forum, or anything else, their words are to others as well, and affect them accordingly. If they don’t know how to consider others, uh, that’s a serious problem, and it will show on either essays or rec letters.

Vehenslucem: I sent you a message to your cc! And thanks bro for your post :)

more advices or criticisms, keep it going. but keep in mind what I wrote above.

Thanks.

Not directed at koharvard, but to this whole thread in general: http://25.media.■■■■■■■■■■/tumblr_lgkj7ja3za1qesc3io1_400.gif.

As long as his application isn’t EXACTLY as he posted above and a little more humble, he’ll be fine. I think people on CC generally (definitely not true of everyone though) try to make themselves look extremely impressive, since the atmosphere on this site is ultra-competitive. Also people here sometimes use the big, fancy words as a means to prepare for SATs; I would think it helps no doubt. Just something to keep in mind when reading KoHarvard’s responses.

I think society values the humble person less and less nowadays and loves the accomplished one. However, I think colleges are now avidly looking for that applicant who is extremely successful, but you wouldn’t know it. Like you know a person’s smart, but you don’t exactly know how smart he or she really is. Now this is totally my opinion, but some people (which could include admissions officers) love that underdog. So as long as he hasn’t SAT Vocabularized the living ***** out his application and essays, and presented himself in an way with a dash of humility, KoHarvard looks extremely competitive for any top school.

I just think people on CC tend to toot their horn too much around other ultra-competitive people. This may come across in the application and may be a reason that leads to rejection.

VERDICT: CC is a bad site. Get off it. Take everything you read as a quick resource with a grain of salt. Please. I believe this site taints applications.

And good luck KoHarvard!

^ interesting insight!

Going to Oxford interview (ppe)! never been to europe, and it’s soo exciting to take a break from senior, application-stress time!! (meaning I care more that I will be travelling for a week in England than the interview! - which also means upenn stays my no.1 for any doubters there!)

any suggestions on travelling tips in England? I heard that pubs are quite popular there!!
