Guys, the anecdotal evidence suggests that international interviews, in countries where very few or no interviewers are available, are selective (because the ones who got admitted were interviewed). However, when I called Harvard and checked their website, I found that interviews are conducted only if they require further information. Does it mean that exceptional candidates (internationals) are accepted without interviews and that interviews are conducted only for the well-rounded or the middle-of-the-acceptance pool kind of students? Also, do you have any anecdotal evidence of international acceptance without an interview? (I saw just one guy from UK who was accepted without an interview)
Yes, I know a number of international applicants currently attending Harvard who did not have an interview.
@skieurope Are they from self-initiate interview countries or ‘Limited Interview’ countries or ‘No Interview’ countries or all or any combination?
They were topics that have come up in conversation over the past few years. I was not creating a chart. So, let’s say it was a mix.
some people posted that all international students (even medalists and all) who they met at Harvard had their interviews. So I was worried. And now, I’m a little relieved. So the interviews are conducted only if additional information is required for internationals who have a decent chance? And if one gets it, it is a positive sign but if one doesn’t, it isn’t a negative sign?
I’m not going to speculate about how they choose which applicants to interview. Nobody outside of Harvard Admissions knows, and they won’t say anything other than the official line. Speculating is just a parlor game. As I’ve said elsewhere, all you can do at this point is sit and wait the 11 days, and hopefully find something to occupy the time in the meantime.
For future applicants who might find this helpful: It indeed looks as though no interview = no admission for students at limited/no interview countries. However, my advice would be to not care about Harvard the moment you submit that application because it’s completely beyond your control. This includes not giving a f about the interview. And if you’re reading this, it is probably because you are desperate about Harvard and the interview just as I was a few months back. So here’s something you might find useful (it is actually the suggestion I would give to the November-to-December me): “if you didn’t get an interview, you’re not getting in. Period.”
Maybe there are RARE exceptions, but expecting miracles is only going to hurt you. Another suggestion would be to not apply SCEA anywhere as that tends to make you extremely desperate as I was from November to December. As of now, I couldn’t care less because I feel I’ll get in somewhere if not at Harvard or Princeton or Brown or Prawn or whatever. The same will probably be true for you. Good luck.
