International? IS IT FAIR FOR US???

Right on man...my grandfather said the EXACT thing, in another language of course.

He was the only one in his family with guts to move to America. If you thought $40,000 was bad, my grandfather not only had to pay a ridiculous tuition and living fee, he also had to have all of his nails removed. The potency of anesthetics back in the day weren't even close the ones we use today.

Eventually, my grandfather was the only one in his family to make it big. He drastically changed the lives of all the generations that followed him. vykng1987, don't let anything stop you from your dreams. You'll def. make it if you put your all into it!

That's what we're talking about guys.Making it BIG! nyway just received Harvard's rejection letter. I'm on Pomona's wait list as welll. In case it doesn't work 4 Pomona, then i have to go to med school next semester in my country. can anyone tell me how difficult it is to work as a doctor or further med school in the states? maybe i can then know what to do if Pomona works out.
I also don't want to be lyk everyone else in my family. Life would be very comfortable as a doctor in my country but that's not my definition of success.

walnut are you a sarkozist??????

WALNUT: I don't think you read my post carefully. I was characterizing an incorrect foreigner's viewpoint.

My official stance is that that THINGS ARE FINE THE WAY THEY ARE.

Ahh...my fault, sorry. I probably wrote that around 3-5 am.

Yes, i'm a Sarkozist (thank GOD Chirac is out). I'm *not *a fan of certain policies that Sarkozy supports, but it's a start. I probably should mention that i'm a business major, and all my posts are biased in that way.

"if you are applying aid as an international transfer, chances are you get rejected everywhere. there's hardly any money for international transfers....even at those top and rich school."

i'm beginning to feel more and more this is true. i've been rejected by every private school i've applied to so far :(

well.. depends.. i know for those chinese applicants to ivy league colleges

they usually get full aid package....

oh. does it vary by race then? just curious. thanks flora.

I don't think it varies by race. Mostly, I think academic performance and research experience are what the prestigious schools look for when they decide to offer financial aid to international students.
To add to what florazhao mentioned about Chinese applicants who receive full aid package from ivy league colleges, you forgot to emphasize that those are not just any Chinese applicants, they are the brightest students who out compete other applicants. It just happens that there are a lot of Chinese geniuses who are international students, and I think that's why they deserve to receive financial aid.

Sorry OFF:
walnut, how come you're sarkozyst?..no way....:(Well, if you're a business major it makes sense, but any other reasons for not electing S

maybe we should karcher up some of those foreign students, eh eh?

sarahtaq, not everybody wants to stay in the US, it's a stereotype, times have changed and a lot of countries are in a totally different economic situation right now. Anyway, why everyone wants to come here?Well, to your knowledge, the official language of this country is English and it's the most popular language in the world to learn and it's obviously not foreign students' fault, go ask British colonialists. So ofcourse people want to get their education in a country where they would be able to communicate-it's not a rocket science! As for the US in particular, of you lived overseas, even in Europe, you would notice(you can look it up in any "Introduction to International Business" textbook) the influence of American culture is IMMENSE, mostly because of corporations and America's ambitions in the area of international politics. And believe me, it's not like everyone's excited about another fast food restaurant in their city, it's just a quite powerful "smart marketing-great brainwashing" campaign that leads to a popularity of the food of such a low quality, especially comparing to the quality of a local cuisine(which could be also presented as a fast food on a local market, but here comes a big powerful corporation and there's virtually nothing they can do!). In addition, all these shows and Hollywood movies, I mean look at "Friends", I remember talking to my friends from Europe and they were wondering "what is so funny about it?"-ofcurse they're not gonna understand all this humor because it's a totally different culture, but here comes some Mr.Murdock or whoever, and local TV channels start running it over and over again so people have no choice but to watch it!
etc. etc. Also I really found some of the messages regarding "Why are these foreigners come to our great country?" or "you gotta be happy that at least they look at your app", "you gotta be happy that things are the way they are right now" etc.. really mean and disrespectful towards international students and no, there is no "Ecole Politic" in France it's called Science Po and if you visit their official website, on the fron page there's this huge thing "International Students apply for our Grad Program Online" and then there's also a list of scholarships available. And NO, Oxbridge doesn't base their decisions on the nationality, neither does it get subsidized by tax payers, nor does Harvard, Yale, Cornell, USC, Rice and other private schools where the majority of foreigners are dreaming to get in. Higher education in America is a BUSINESS, A BIG PROFITABLE BUSINESS,it's one of top 5 US exports to your knowledge, otherwise, if it wasn't then why would Ms. Rice along with Mr. Bush gather the official meetings emphasizing how they want foreign students back in the U.S. after they totally screwed up with their "after 9/11" limited quotas, restricted paperwork process, and sometimes humiliating interviews in the U.S. emabassies for foreingers, not to mention unexpected CIA visits to a lot of Middle Eastern students(look up for a scandal at UT Austin). You can read tons of official reports that U.S. is losing its positions in the world's higher education market and also losing a lot of money. And when American students are like "be thankful they even reviewed your application" -who's gonna come here when people are giving that kind of attitude?

hazzard, I tried reading your post, but the lack of formatting into paragraphs makes it very difficult to get through. Just a heads up.

and the trend continues. i'm wondering if more international applicants are having similar issues with private schools?

seriously who's going to do all the research in US universities if there's no international student.

Hint: check the percentage of international students in top grad schools.

Well, the undergrad/grad situation is very very different.

bump for more rejections pending

holy **** hazzard's post is completely unreadable.

OP, please work on your English writing skills before complaining that top American colleges are unfair to you.
