I do not know where I would like to go to college, but my parents insist that I attend college in the US (I'm a US resident). At some point in my life though, I would love to move to Europe, perferably somewhere where I can speak the language (I can speak English and am continuing French all through high school and college). Another country I might consider is Italy, if I can learn Italian at some point. So basically I would just like to know about medical schools in France, how they accept American undergrad agrees, what would be expected of me to get in, and general comparisons. Thank you so much!

In which country do you plan to ultimately live and practice medicine? Whichever country that is, that’s where you should go to medical school. Graduates of most foreign medical schools who wish to be doctors in the US must pass a rigorous extra qualification exam that many of them flunk.

Probably France, Belgium, or Italy

So, you plan on practicing and emigrating to another country???

if you want to live somewhere, then i say skip all the american undergrad bs and just head straight there for med school. you can save 2ish years that way and if you decide to come back, you can try to do your residency here and practice here. some girl from my boyfriend’s high school went straight to a med school in poland and she’ll be done before many people.

so not go to an american college? no my parents are making me do that. i figured i’d go to europe for med school. would that work?

^^the problem with that is many European medical schools enroll students right out of high school and teach them both the pre-med and medical curriculum, as opposed to the US system of pre-med in college and then enroll medical school. So the US and European models of medical education do not mesh very well together.

I think you’d better take this one step at a time. Many pre-med students change their minds once they have to take Organic Chem and other courses.

Also, how would you pay to go to a foreign med school? Federal student loans for med school cannot be used to go to med school outside of the US. Those loans are to train people to be doctors in this country.

coureur is correct. And med school admission is often based on one test and limited to students from the country. This is how it works in France, don’t know in Italy.

There is a whole sub-forum devoted to foreign med schools inside the med school forum. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and scroll down to find it.

Right now you should concentrate on getting into college in the US. You may change your mind about med school and take a completely different route in life. There are any number of excellent MBA programs overseas, as well as many opportunities to spend a junior year and/or a summer term abroad. You have more international options than you think.

Wishing you all the best.
