international needs help choosing college ! PLEASE :D

I am hoping to apply to the U.S this year, I am a british student and have just finished alevels and I hope to achieve 3 A's or better.

I'm looking for a college which has:
small classes
accessable professors
broad or liberal curriculum
learning support centre
good opportunites (internships etc)
a good social life( maybe greek life)

I'm not to bothered about location or size.

I'd like my SAT's to be about a 2000 and 700+ for subject tests.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful , I'm so overwhelmed!!

Thanks :D

There are literally dozens of colleges and universities that meet your criteria. I have a couple of questions:

1) How did you do on your O Level (GCSE/IGCSE)?
2) What courses did you take for your A Level?
3) Do you anticipate getting any A* on your A Level exams?
4) What is your intended major(s)?
5) Any financial limitations we should know about?

1) 5A*'s ( bio, food and nutrition, chem, eng lit and eng lang)
4 A’s ( phys, r.s, maths, spanish)
B in drama
2) I took biology, physics , maths, chemistry and general studies.

3) I have been predicted an a* in bio, and if i resit my maths ( i had a bad one today) I would hope for an A* in that too.

4) Probably a science ( not engineering and not pre-med) maybe biology or physics. however i’m also interested in business. If the option was available I may minor in dance, but as long as there’s a club in not too bothered.

5) No, perfectly capable of paying fees of $50,000 a year.

( thanks for the speedy reply alexandre)

Rhodes College:

small classes - avg class size is 13
accessable professors - every professor is also an advisor, very high NSSE scores for student relationships with faculty
broad or liberal curriculum - liberal arts curriculum
learning support centre - multiple support centers - math tutoring, writing center, international student support, etc.
good opportunites (internships etc) - located in a million-person metro are with great internships
a good social life( maybe greek life) - about half of the students go greek

has bio, physics, and business majors. No dance program, but there is a club.

Your SATs are a match. Cost is far below 50k/yr even before financial aid and even when living expenses are taken into consideration.

Rhodes is good.

Fordham???

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just took a quick look at Rhodes, looks incredible. I’m hoping to take a trip in september to visit some to check they feel homey enough for me to live there !

mom2 ill be sure to check out Fordham, thanks .

Ellie

1) At almost all major research universities, the introductory science classes will be huge (at least 50). However, the classes do get smaller ones you progress into your major.

2) Again, research universities will provide you with the most internships and opportunities

3) Don’t get fooled by the student-faculty ratio. Some universities manipulate it by including non-teaching faculty.

Do you prefer private universities or are also fine with publics? Would you like to have international (in terms of students, clubs, etc.) presence on the campus?

I thought of Fordham because of the science and dance interest. Being in NY (one campus in Manhattan) it would serve your dance interests.

Maybe LMU in Los Angeles would also work.

mom2 I just had a quick look, it looks lovely. Just the right amount of community and in a great location ! Thanks ill be sure to check out LMU too .

collegebiomed I don’t mind some big classes, but as a whole I don’t like sitting and listening and taking notes. I prefer something a little more intimate with some discussion. Thanks for the advice about faculty ratio. I don’t mind if it’s private or public as long as its possible for me to get in and I like the school. I don’t think It will be one of my priorities to seek out other internationals so no clubs like that will be necessary.

ellie

Are you looking for highly ranked research universities for sciences or good (definitely, prestigious) universities that offer science majors?(I hope you understand what I mean here). For instance, MIT vs. U. of Virginia

Yes, I’d like them to be good at the sciences and generally good. Prestige however is not important to me. I don’t want to be anywhere too competitive (I get that impression from Harvard and such, that people would go out of their way to be the best). So Id choose caliber over ranking. ( I hope that was what you meant!)

Some of the ones I personally know and would suggest would be:

1) U. of Rochester: Great environment and highly regarded for sciences*****
2) U. of Chicago*******
3) Stanford*******
4) Johns Hopkins: Top research university of US********
5) Duke: Similar to Hopkins academically
6) Washington University in St.Louis
7) Rice******
8) Carnegie Mellon******
9) MIT, CalTech, Penn, Stanford
10) Northwestern, UMichigan
11) Rutgers: good in sciences, especially strong in physics and mathematics
12) Case Western, U. of Pitt, U. of Virginia
13) Dartmouth******
******These seems to perfectly fit your preferences.

Some LAC’s (If someone would confirm…my best guess): Brandeis, Harvey Mudd, Reed,

Woah ! do you not think they would all be reach schools for me ? I mean they are some pretty highly ranked universities ! If you think I’m a match for any of those schools though please let me know !

Thanks

My bad, I didn’t look at that aspect…haha first admission is necessary

Let me create a list for some matches…

I mean I’d love to attend one of those schools but yeh the getting in , thats always a problem :p

Take a look at Scripps College outside of Los Angeles. It is in the town of Claremont where 5 colleges are, all VERY close together (across the street, etc). Scripps is a women’s liberal arts college but the science faculty is shared with Pitzer College and Claremont Mckenna College. Scripps is known for having a beautiful campus with friendly people. It is possible to take classes at all five of the Claremont College. Pomona College and Harvey Mudd College are the other two. Pomona would be more of a reach for you, but maybe it’s doable.
[Scripps College : The Women’s College : Claremont, California](http://www.scrippscollege.edu/)

Thanks, I’ll be sure to check out the claremonts I might look more at Pitzer though as having been at an all girls school since I was four I’m hoping to go to somewhere co-ed. Yeh Id heard pomona is an INCREDIBLE liberal arts school.

Thanks though :D

Matches:

Publics:
U. of Michigan
Rutgers
PennState
U. of Virginia
Clemson
U. of Delaware

Privates:
U. of Rochester
Case Western
U. of Southern California
Brandeis
Northeastern
Boston U. (urban campus though)

thank you collegebiomed ! I think I know have a pretty good list of colleges to check out !
Now I’ve just got to find my safeties ! Thank you

I would suggest using Collgeboard’s college matchmaker
