Oh, I apologize.

I guess I was very clear that I said RESPECTED, not popular or well-known.

In terms of popularity, UCLA maybe up there with Michigan, or maybe even more popular in some places as LA is quite popular amongst Asians, particularly East Asians and Southeast Asians. But in terms of academic prestige=respect, I don’t think they’re on the same league. Michigan alumni hold positions in government and business. Very few UCLA alumni have held high posts in government/business, on the other hand.

Michigan’s ties to East Asia, China and Japan in particular, have been very strong since the 19th century, when those countries had not yet opened their doors to the world. Michigan was one of the first two or three universities to have established ties with Japan.

Very few UCLA alumni have held high posts in government/business, on the other hand.

That is simply NOT true. Sorry, but I’ve seen numerous gov. officials and CEOs graduated from UCLA.

^ which countries are you talking about?

And, please provide links. Thanks.

I think UCLA’s reputation in Korea is very strong.

^ I think so too as there are a lot of Koreans in UCLA. But in terms of respect, I would say Michigan has got the edge…and this is due to its stronger professional and postgraduate programs.

Michigan is superior to UCLA in MBA, law and engineering. They have similar reputation for medicine. Michigan has also more programs that are top 5 than has UCLA.

For undergrad, Michigan is also stronger than UCLA, although the difference in quite negligible.

Everyone in Asia knows about Duke basketball and its great medical school. That alone trumps the higher quantity of alumni presence that Michigan and UCLA may enjoy.

Duke has a ton of Asians and Koreans so whoever said people in Asia don’t travel to the US for their undergraduate education is dead wrong.

lol, Are you Asian? Duke is not well known in Asia. Duke’s presence in Asia has only been formalized a few years ago in Singapore with Duke-NUS graduate medical school, and even then Duke’s reputation fall way behind schools like UCLA, Michigan, Berkeley, etc…

Nobody cares about Duke Basketball. We are no longer in that little Duke-centric world of yours.

On the contrary, there must not exist even one well-educated Asian man who hasn’t heard of Duke’s Medical School or doesn’t know someone studying there. Yes, Asians follow basketball a lot since Yao and Yi and the vast majority of them definitely know about Duke through the sport.

No, I am not Asian.

Oh yes. Kobe said in an interview that he would’ve played for the Blue Devils had he decided to take the college route instead of jumping from highschool to the NBA. And everyone knows about the NBA and Kobe in Asia

The ppl I know in Asia tend to follow NBA basketball rather than NCAA basketball.

UCLA’s fame internationally at least in Europe is mostly due to its basketball legacy, not academics.

Duke has several things going for it in Asia.

1) Coach K and the Beijing Olympics

2) Tibet controversy

3) Brodhead’s tour of India

4) New Fuqua campuses in New Delhi, Dubai, and Shanghai

5) Duke-NUS medical school

On the last point, I of course have to point out that UNC and NUS are offering joint degrees.

pshh, Coach K in Olympics…

Former President of Johns Hopkins speaks fluent Mandarin and was invited by China’s Ministry of Education to go to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Only Rice, Johns Hopkins and Yale’s Presidents were invited along with 8 other Presidents from other universities in the world to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony

President Leebron has yellow fever.

haha unfortunately the college I’m going to next year has ZERO international reputation…I bet when I visit my grandparents and relatives in China next month they will stare at me with a blank face when I mention that I’m going to Clemson haha

Clemson is great. One of my exes went there from CT and she loved it.

Aha! Now SuperPippo’s true method of rating schools becomes clear…

Why would Asians care about an overrated and underperforming basketball team like Dook’s?

Cuse, let’s try and be objective.
I noted things about Duke, even if my Carolina loyalties made me slip in a blurb about the UNC-NUS partnership.
