Does Duke have a lot of international prestige? Is it well known in other countries?

I don't think it's all that prestigious I asked my aunt who works in Hong Kong what she thought of JHU, UMich, Duke and Penn State. She pointed out that JHU and UMich were the most prestigious from an international standpoint. Also, I beleive that according to USNWR, the peer evaluation of Duke is fairly low. But I may be wrong.

Yup, you're wrong. :p Duke's peer assessment score is pretty high. Higher than several of the non-HYP Ivies (which are generally considered peer institutions), in fact.

Duke is well-known in England and Germany. I'm not sure about anywhere else because those are the only two countries I've visited. :D

Well Duke is still a young institution so its prestige is still growing. It is becoming more recognized every year!

In the London Time's ranking of the top 200 (or 500?) best universities in the world, Duke ranked in the thirties under U Mich and John Hopkins and I think even Penn.

Apparently, this ranking is less political than the US News one.

If you're referring to the THES ranking, your information is outdated. Duke was ranked 11.

1 Harvard University
2 Massachusetts Institute of Technology
3 Cambridge University
4 Oxford University
5 Stanford University
6 University of California, Berkeley
7 Yale University
8 California Institute of Technology
9 Princeton University
10 Ecole Polytechnique
11 Duke University

THES is a little...weird...(see http://www.tuwien.ac.at/pr/news/doc_news/times_world_ranking_2005.pdf) Duke jumped 41 spots (all, clearly, due to the completion and opening of the Fitzpatrick Center). Georgia Tech dropped 83 spots... The number of schools at or above a certain score are:
n(100) = 1
n(90) = 1
n(80) = 6
n(70) = 8
n(60) = 10
n(50) = 27
n(40) = 44
n(30) = 83
n(20) = 200
so the sensitivity is suspect...

That having been said, UMich 36 (was 31), Penn 32 (was 28), Hopkins 27 (was 25)...
