I am interested in a school with a really strong study abroad program. I think I might want to attend a liberal arts college, but I am also looking at state universities. I want to do a lot of traveling/study abroad in countries in East Asia, Europe and North Africa. I am very liberal and would like to attend a school with a diverse student body with diverse ideologies, but would prefer that there still be a large liberal democratic presence. Universities with strong social justice and newspaper programs are of interest to me.

Maybe Haverford or Swarthmore in Philly or look at a New England LAC. I give you this information as a Conservative, so if I felt politically uncomfortable somewhere because it was so liberal, you may feel better about it.

I would look into Northwestern, Boston College, Northeastern and Syracuse for strong journalism schools with social justice aims and excellent study abroad programs. You didn’t post stats so not sure if these schools are too competitive for you or not.

What are your stats?
The first school that comes to mind for liberal democrat, study abroad, and social justice concerns is Macalester. I would also think Grinnell, St Olaf, Goucher, and Dickinson could match. Goucher is the only college that requires study abroad and has a scholarship that’s planned for all students to use ($2,300, except Honors Students who get $3,000.)

GPA: 3.5
ACT: 29
Class rank unsure.
Community Service hrs: 109
Head of the Social Justice Committee
SADF (Safe and Drug-Free Program)
Entertainment editor for the school newspaper
J.O.L.T.- Jewish Opportunities in Learning for Teens
Work experience as a swim instructor
internship at local newspaper
summer swim team

Take a look at Hampshire. Grinnell maybe. Can you retake ACT or try SAT to expand your options? Browse Colleges that Change Lives.

Eckerd College is a small LAC in St. Petersburg, Fl that ranks #10 among baccalaureate institutions sending students to study abroad for a short-term and #20 among the top 40 baccalaureate institutions sending total number of students to study abroad. The 4-1-4 calendar provides opportunities to study abroad for the winter term, a Sring into summer term as well as Fall and Spring terms. They have their own London Study center and exchange programs in Europe and Asia. They sponsor numerous Spring break service trips abroad that are low cost. Eckerd is also known for the Writers in Paradise series sponsored by alum Denis Lehane and Sterling Watson. The Current is the name of their newspaper that has won numerous awards. A local theater company, has made Eckerd their home. Take a look at the International Education link on the website to see the list of countries that Eckerd students have travelled to. They have health and wellness dorms and a health club. Eckerd students for the most part are very liberal in their beliefs but also very tolerant of other’s lifestyles and beliefs. There is a pool but no swim team. The waterfront is an active spot where you can take out kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats and fishing gear (no extra fees). They offer free sailing lessons, and there is a sail team. The Hillel is very active and a great Rabbi is on staff. The merit scholarship for your stats this year would be $17,000 per year.

Earlham, Bennington, Prescott, DePaul, Marquette, UWashington, HamlineU, UWisconsin-Oshkosh, St. Louis U, and a bunch of other schools in your range have journalism and social justice.

At Earlham College, both your merit and need-based aid follow you on Study Abroad. (including for year-long programs) It’s not like that with every college and should be something you’re aware of about a college before making your final selection. Earlham meets all the requirements on your list expect I don’t know a lot about their newspaper except that they do have one.
