International Relations and Global Studies

so this seems like a good major for law school, and it sounds pretty interesting to. can anyone tell me how it is? like is it hard? the classes required seem interesting, but they seem like the writing seminar type, which i dont like.. is this how they are in reality? any feedback would be great!

hey, that’s my major! lol

Right now im just in the intro class that you’ll have to take if you end up majoring in it (IRG 301) and it’s SO interesting. probably my favorite class (I have michael anderson). there’s quite a lot of reading you have to do every week and you have to write a reading response to each of the readings, but it’s not that much if you just stay on top of it. if you really like the subject then you’ll REALLY like the class, i have it at 9:00 AM but i never dread waking up for it.
i’m also in GRG 305 which is required for IRG majors and I really don’t like the professor and there was only one I could choose from =/ it’s a 500ish person class i think, and even though the subject is interesting the way she teaches it makes it sooo boring. but it’s a blow-off class really. i studied for maybe an hour for the first midterm and made a 98. haha

AmericanInParis- who do you have for GRG 305?

and

Mu

I have IRG as a second major and the only thing that really sucks is that the major is so new the department is still working out issues. The biggest one being the required track classes. ALOT of the classes havent been available during the semesters it’s been available as a major (this semester and spring 2011, I mean) so you end up having to pick whichever track has the most classes available regardless of if you want to do that track or not. It’s a problem for those of us who are double majoring and trying to graduate on time but I’m not sure if it will be a problem for freshmen or anything as things get more settled.

And you HAVE to study abroad sometime, so keep that in mind. If money is an issue…I don’t know if they are going to have some sort of IRG scholarship since its REQUIRED for the degree or what so you might want to talk to the study abroad people.

The type of classes depend entirely on what classes you choose. There are only 2 official IRG classes (the intro with Anderson and the upper-level one). I’m not sure what the deal is with the upper level one. An adviser told me they weren’t sure what it was going to be last semester and that it was only for seniors but I don’t know. The rest of the classes you take are from other departments (English, Middle Eastern Studies, Anthropology, Government, etc). So you’ll just have to read the info on the department websites to see if they are seminars or whatever.

A lot of the track classes are upper division so I expect them to be like less than 100 people, lecturing, papers, maybe discussion as a participation grade if it’s small enough. I’m taking one of the track classes on the list this semester and there are 17 people in it.

I didn’t go to the mass group advising thing this semester so something new might have been said that I’ll find out about when I meet with an adviser next week but that’s basically it.

thanks for the input! i dont think ill pick this major, since it seems disorganized and i dont really want to study abroad maybe…

Hi! UT Class of 2017 here. Has everything been straightened out yet, or is everything still disorganized? How heavy is the workload, and what are the classes like? Small/large, discussion based, etc.? Would it be hard to major in IRG and also do Pre-Med?

@janetor I’ve been wondering the same thing! I’m trying to decide between IRG and communication Studies. Help!!!
