If you do that you will get rejected at one course for sure. 7 people did that at my school and they all got rejected at atleast one course.

University of Geneva (YAY first time someone's mentioning it here!) is better than U of Lausanne. It's in french but some classes can be taken in English as well. It has a good IR program, and the fact that it's in Geneva leaves great opportunities for possible internships with all the international organisations and embassies in the city.
Also, Haute Ecole Internationale (HEI) is one of the best IR schools in the world. It's only a graduate school now and it's in Geneva.

I speak french fluently so the language wouldn't be a problem (I actually speak french better than english). Yeah I am considering applying there, it is one of the top 40 in the WORLD, although I am not sure I could get in. They require 5 AP's, so that wouldn't be a problem (I'll end my senior year with 10), but the thing is that one of them has to be a science, in which I suck. I'll try to get an AP Int'l Diploma and see if they consider that an equivalent of the Swiss Matura.

I'm compiling my list of universities in the UK (IR major) and this is what I've got so far:

University of St Andrews
University of Edinburgh
University of Wales, Aberystwyth
London School of Economics

Those I know for sure I'm going to apply, but I have two spots left, so I was thinking:
King's College London
University of Warwick

It's weird how all the universities in the UK have "University of ..." in their name (LSE and KCL are part of the University of London)...

So what do you think of my list?

P.S:btw, with my AP scores and predicted scores I'm predicting something like 850 UCAS points.

I'm not sure about IR but UCL and Bristol should be pretty good.

Considering your interests, I would apply to a general IR program rather than one focused on a specific sub-field (intelligence, strategic studies, etc.). As for universities, I'd skip Edinburgh and add Oxford to your list. It may be a reach, but better off trying IMHO. I'd put together the following:

Reach:

Oxford
St Andrews
LSE

Safety:

Aberystwyth
KCL
Warwick

For International Relations, Geneva is one of the best cities in the world with all those NGO's, embassies, etc. And it's more or less in the middle of France, Italy and Germany. Plus it's a very beautiful city!

Swiss universities have about 30% international students, thus a global atomsphere on the campus would definitely exist.

And for admission, you need only a 3 on the science AP (and biology counts as a science) would this be impossible for you?
You could ask the university about the AP Int'l Diploma, but can't you do the IB? This is accepted and you need only scores around 30!

The IB is not avaliable at my high school, otherwise I would have taken it. I don't think I can handle an AP in science, so I'll just hope that I can compensate the lack of science with an abundance of Social Sciences AP's.

I looked at the KCL degrees and programmes, and there is only war studies, so I think I will not apply there. I might apply to Oxford, but I don't think I will: I know I could never get in (my GPA is not that great and I predict a 1900 on my SAT), so I'd rather fill the spot with another one (Edinburgh).

So without KCL there is a spot left: what do you think about Bristol or York? Do they have good IR departments?
If not, is there another that you'd like to recommend?

jwagner - warwick is not a safety option for most people....

What can you tell me about Bristol UWE? And the University of York? Are they good for IR? Any other that you'd recomment?

In my school Bristol UWE is usually for the not so intellectually gifted if you get what i mean.

Bristol UWE is an ex polytechnic. Bristol University is far better academically.

Ok, this is my current list for the UK (for International Relations):

University of St Andrews
University of Edinburgh
University of Wales, Aberystwyth
London School of Economics
Essex University
University of York

What do you think?

Question: Would it be possible to just take a course in Russian language, without having to take a degree in it?

What other universities in Europe outside of the UK are good for International Relations (French, Spanish, Italian, or English-speaking)?

If you're really interested in the UK, try SOAS. Maybe Sciences Po as well? Remember, we're a North American, English speaking board and don't have great knowledge of European Unis.

Yes, but I know some people out there know a lot about British universities.

I've taken York off of my list, and added Essex, so this is what it looks like now:

London School of Economics and Political Science
University of St Andrews
University of Edinburgh
University of Wales, Aberystwyth
University of Sussex
University of Essex

What do you think now? What would you change in it?
I'm trying to divide my list into: universities I might get into (St Andrews, Edinburgh, LSE), and universities I probably will get into (Aberystwyth, Sussex, Essex). Do you have another system of organizing the universities (not the US reach/match/safety system, I only have 6 spots)?

Sorry, COMPLETELY DISREGARD MY LAST POST, I wanted to edit it but I went over the 20 minutes limit so I couldn't.

Yes, but I know some people out there know a lot about British universities.

I've slightly changed it, so this is what it looks like now

London School of Economics and Political Science
University of St Andrews
University of Edinburgh
University of Wales, Aberystwyth
University of York
University of Warwick

I want to study International Relations, and I would appreciate if some of the universities had good Russian language departments (I know St. Andrews and Edinburgh have some of the best in the UK, but I don't know about the rest).

What do you think now? What would you change in it?

it looks good... why did you take oxford off ?
btw how is the American University of Rome for IR ?

Well I took Oxford off for several reasons. The first obvious one is that I could never get in, which is 100% true, so I'd rather use the spot for another university. And the second one is that they don't really have an IR program, they have a Politics Phylosophy and Economics program, which isn't exactly what I'm interested in.

I don't know how the American University of Rome is, but I've devided to forget about international universities in Europe: they are too expensive (much more expensive than their local counterparts, which for me, being an EU citizen, are in many cases free), and they are often not very good (except a few like Jacobs University Bremen).

ok i get it
